About the position
The ICU Veterinary Assistant (PT) position at Michigan State University involves working with animal patients in the Small Animal Emergency Medicine Unit of the Veterinary Medical Center. The role includes monitoring vital signs, administering IV fluids, assisting clinicians and veterinary technicians, and maintaining cleanliness in the ward areas. This position is part of a commitment to providing high-quality veterinary care and supporting the educational mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Responsibilities
- Monitor temperature, pulse, and respiration of animal patients.
- Administer IV fluid therapy and monitor its administration.
- Walk animals outside for exercise and relief.
- Clean ward areas and stock supplies as needed.
- Process lab samples and medication orders.
- Enter charges in the hospital information system.
- Assist clinicians, veterinary technicians, and clinical students with animal patients.
Requirements
- High school education or equivalent.
- Six months to one year of related work experience in a veterinary practice.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and perform basic computer skills.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with general handling of cats and dogs.
- Knowledge of animal restraint techniques for blood collection and IV catheter placement.
- Familiarity with positioning for X-rays and IV fluid monitoring.
- Previous exposure to monitoring equipment such as IV fluid pumps, EKG, Pulse oximeter, and Doppler blood pressure.
