About the position

The Idaho Urban Conservationist at American Farmland Trust (AFT) is responsible for working directly with urban and small-scale producers and landowners in northern Idaho to implement conservation practices and understand NRCS programs. This role involves collaboration with NRCS staff to ensure effective conservation planning and outreach, supporting the delivery of USDA Farm Bill programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist urban and small-scale producers in identifying USDA Farm Bill programs for land use viability and conservation.
  • Work with producers in selecting and applying suitable soil and water conservation practices.
  • Conduct field conservation planning visits and provide necessary planning assistance.
  • Develop conservation plans that document producer decisions and aid in the installation of practices.
  • Compile conservation planning maps for applicants and maintain program data and documentation.
  • Strengthen relationships between urban producers and NRCS programs.
  • Serve as a community-based contact between NRCS and urban producers.
  • Communicate details of USDA Farm Bill conservation programs to producers.
  • Conduct outreach activities including writing articles, giving talks, and participating in community events.
  • Collaborate with NRCS and partner staff to enhance urban agriculture activities.

Requirements

  • Direct experience working with farmers, ranchers, and agricultural landowners.
  • Familiarity with federal and state policies for food production and natural resources conservation.
  • Experience in peer-to-peer education or training with agricultural stakeholders.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with diverse partners.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Experience in creating public outreach campaigns and communication tools.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms.
  • Intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for AFT's mission.
  • Support for a team culture of shared learning and problem solving.
  • Valid driver's license and a working motor vehicle.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with small farms and community gardens in urban settings.
  • Knowledge of agricultural landscapes and issues in the Pacific Northwest.
