YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago is seeking qualified and experienced instructors with construction experience to teach the NCCER Core Construction curriculum to participants in the IL Works Program. This program, funded by a grant from the State of Illinois, aims to prepare participants for entry into Department of Labor Certified Apprenticeship Programs in the construction trades. Classes will be held at various YMCA Hubs, including the South Side YMCA in Chicago's Woodlawn community and Kelly Hall YMCA in Chicago's West Humboldt Park neighborhood. The position is part-time, limited term, and contract-based, with a salary of $40/hour plus benefits.

  • Attain and/or maintain NCCER Instructor Certification status (YMCA will sponsor qualified candidates as needed to attain these certifications)
  • Deliver classroom instruction utilizing the NCCER Core Curriculum, including OSHA-10 and First Aid modules
  • Apply engaging, effective, and equitable teaching techniques to build rapport with participants through a welcoming, supportive and equitable classroom environment
  • Exercise versatility and creativity to deliver engaging instruction including hands-on learning
  • Leverage technology to facilitate learning and enrich the classroom experience
  • Deliver performance evaluations and exams
  • Maintain timely and accurate student records, including attendance, module completion, exam performance, other evaluations, and participant performance profiles using the WorkNet database
  • Ensure facilities/labs and experiential job sites are safe and adequate for training
  • Work collaboratively with IL Works Program Director and all other IL Works program team members to ensure participants have access to available supportive services and are able to complete the classroom portion of the IL Works pre-apprenticeship program
  • Work closely with the IL Works Transition Coach to create a clear pathway for all participants to a DOL certified apprenticeship program in the construction trades
  • Comply with all applicable occupational health, safety and environmental laws and regulations
  • Provide one-on-one tutoring as needed
  • Adhere to all NCCER policies and procedures
  • NCCER Instructor Certification or ability to attain one prior to the cohort start date
  • OSHA authorized trainer or ability to attain one prior to the cohort start date
  • Experience in the construction trades as a general contractor, tradesperson, architect, or other construction experience
  • Prior teaching experience and demonstrated ability to effectively teach adult learners
  • Ability to utilize technology to enhance teaching and maintain required records
  • Ability to be both supportive and firm to ensure participant compliance with program requirements
  • Commitment to increasing diversity in the construction trades
  • Ability and willingness to work with team members to support program participants and ensure successful completion of the program and transition into Department of Labor certified apprenticeship programs in the construction trades
  • Relationships in the construction industry and/or construction trades desired but not required
  • $40/hour salary
