About the position

This position is a non-competitive Civil Service position for an Illustrator within the Nassau County School Districts. Under supervision, the Illustrator prepares the design and layout of artwork for the production of a variety of graphic materials and performs related duties as required. The role requires skill in designing, planning, and producing artwork, with assignments received in the form of worksheets outlining general objectives. The Illustrator independently determines the procedures and techniques to be used.

Responsibilities

• Designs and prepares comprehensive layouts for graphic material.
• Selects typeface for graphic materials.
• Reproduces charts, graphs, and maps to designated scale; assembles and prepares statistical charts.
• Prepares layouts for two and three-color overlays for leaflets and flyers.
• Illustrates layouts using photos, sketches, cutouts, cartoons, phototype, and other forms of lettering.
• Designs and letters covers for reports, brochures, and leaflets.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with major course work in commercial art or a closely related field.
• Considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of illustration.
• Considerable knowledge of the techniques and operations used in the preparation of copy for graphic arts material.
• Considerable knowledge of the fundamentals of perspective, design, color harmony, and composition.
• Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in illustration.
• Ability to create effective and artistic formats for books, booklets, and magazines.
• Ability to prepare designs and illustrations, to do original lettering and layouts, and to prepare related displays.
