About the position

The Imaging Service Assistant/Digital Library position at UC San Diego involves providing essential technical, patient care, and clerical support to technologists and radiologists. The role includes scheduling procedures, processing radiographs, and preparing patients for radiographic procedures. The assistant will also be responsible for downloading outside CDs into the Picture Archival Computer System (PACS) and operating various imaging equipment such as film digitizing equipment, CD burners, and document scanners. A strong understanding of computers and new technologies, including PACS, Computerized Radiography (CR), and Digital Radiographs (DR), is crucial for success in this role. In addition to technical skills, the Imaging Service Assistant will demonstrate knowledge of various imaging procedures to effectively prepare both patients and equipment. The role also emphasizes cost containment by maintaining established par levels for film orders, office supplies, forms, linen, and other medical supplies. The assistant will contribute to work organization and scheduling, participate in the selection, training, and evaluation of staff, and engage in cross-training to ensure seamless operations within the Imaging Department. This position is integral to the functioning of the Radiology Department, requiring a commitment to quality control, safety control, and experience with radioactive waste management. The assistant will work closely with a team to ensure high standards of patient care and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to technologists and radiologists by scheduling procedures and processing radiographs.
  • Transport patients and prepare them for radiographic procedures.
  • Download outside CDs into the Picture Archival Computer System (PACS).
  • Operate film digitizing equipment, CD burners, document scanners, and similar accessories.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of various imaging procedures to prepare patients and equipment.
  • Contribute to cost containment by maintaining established par levels for film orders and medical supplies.
  • Participate in work organization and scheduling, including selection, training, and evaluation of staff.
  • Engage in cross-training to ensure seamless operations within the Imaging Department.

Requirements

  • BART or BLS certification at the time of hire, with a commitment to obtain BART within six months of hire.
  • Three years of experience in a similar role and setting, preferably in a hospital Radiology Department.
  • Demonstrated experience in a hospital Radiology Department setting.
  • Working knowledge of Radiology Information System (RIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS).
  • Strong computer knowledge.
  • Experience in quality control, safety control, and/or radioactive waste management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Hospital experience working in a Radiology Department.
  • Digital library experience.
  • Experience checking in patients for imaging procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
