About the position

Norfolk Southern Corporation is seeking an Operations Data Analyst Manager to join our Intermodal & Automotive (IMAU) division, which plays a crucial role in our operations, constituting 62% of our volume and 34% of our revenue. This position is integral to our mission of advancing safety, serving communities, and driving innovation in the rail industry. As part of a collaborative team, you will have the opportunity to lead process improvement projects using the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) methodology. Your role will involve gathering, analyzing, and presenting data to measure operational performance and support decision-making for stakeholders. In this position, you will evaluate and prioritize projects based on operational and commercial strategic needs, deep dive into operational issues using data and anecdotal sources, and implement process changes and corrective actions. You will manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring they are completed within scope and on time. Collaboration is key, as you will work cross-functionally with various departments, including Operations, Capital Planning, Technology Product, and Commercial teams, to develop comprehensive business solutions. Your responsibilities will also include synthesizing and presenting findings from data analyses to decision-makers, compiling data from various sources, and creating reports and interactive dashboards on BI platforms. You will champion the NS Process Improvement Methodology within IMAU Operations, contributing directly to the Operations Excellence Project Roadmap. Responsibilities

  • Direct Process Improvement projects through the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) methodology.
  • Gather, analyze, and present data analysis to measure Intermodal & Automotive operations performance.
  • Seek operational improvement opportunities within our network and operations teams and enact projects to drive sustainable changes.
  • Evaluate and prioritize projects depending on operational and commercial strategic needs.
  • Deep dive operational issues through a combination of data and anecdotal sources to implement process changes, corrective actions, and service level recovery.
  • Manage parallel projects of 8-12 weeks in length.
  • Address gaps in organizational dynamics, processes, and systems to ensure that projects are completed within scope and on-time.
  • Work cross-functionally with departments such as Operations, Capital Planning, Technology Product, and Commercial teams to enact whole of business solutions.
  • Devise and disseminate project-related information to multiple stakeholders to support operational initiatives.
  • Synthesize, analyze, and present findings from data and anecdotal sources to operational and commercial decision-makers.
  • Compile and blend data from multiple sources, e.g., relational stores, flat-files, APIs.
  • Write, debug, and update complex SQL statements.
  • Create reports and interactive dashboards on a variety of BI platforms.
  • Directly contribute to the IM&AU Operations Excellence Project Roadmap.
  • Champion NS Process Improvement Methodology within IMAU Operations.

Requirements

  • Minimum Level: 2-4 years of relevant experience in operations analysis or process improvement.
  • Preferred Level: 5+ years of experience in a similar role.
  • Preferred Education: Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Logistics, Supply Chain, Business Analytics, Business Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, Database Management, Information Systems, Information Technology, or Software Engineering.
  • Desired Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Project, SQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Teradata, IBM DB2, SSIS, SSAS, MDX, Python, Alteryx, Tableau, Tibco Spotfire, SSRS, JIRA, and Microsoft Office.
