About the position

Berry Appleman & Leiden LLP (BAL) is seeking an Immigration Paralegal I to join our dynamic team in New York, NY. As a Paralegal, you will play a crucial role in coordinating with Attorneys in the preparation, filing, and monitoring of various immigration and nationality law matters. This position requires a comprehensive knowledge of the immigration process and mastery of multiple case types, along with increasing client interaction. You will be responsible for leading email and phone communications with clients under the direction of a Senior Paralegal or Attorney, providing guidance on proprietary systems and case processing, and ensuring a thorough understanding of client communication procedures and requirements. In this fast-paced environment, you will demonstrate increasing levels of independence in case handling, processing more advanced and varied corporate immigration cases. Your responsibilities will include preparing forms, letters, documents, and correspondence for attorney review, managing the status of all filed applications and petitions, and utilizing document and data management systems to prepare, monitor, and record all aspects of client casework. You will also perform research to obtain necessary information and initiate contact with government agencies to address potential process delays or problems. Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Attorneys in the preparation, filing, and monitoring of immigration and nationality law matters.
  • Lead email and phone communications with clients under the direction of Senior Paralegal/Attorney.
  • Provide guidance to assignees regarding proprietary systems and case processing.
  • Input client services rendered and send to Accounting for processing.
  • Demonstrate increasing levels of independence in case handling and advance knowledge base.
  • Process advanced and varied corporate immigration cases.
  • Evaluate cases, relay concerns, and proactively escalate to appropriate BAL team members.
  • Prepare forms, letters, documents, and correspondence for attorney review.
  • Manage the status of all filed applications and petitions and finalize documents after attorney review.
  • Utilize document and data management systems to prepare, monitor, and record all aspects of client casework.
  • Prepare internal caseload reports for management.
  • Identify problematic cases and discuss strategies and/or solutions with Attorney.
  • Perform research to obtain information such as background on a company or industry, current wages, and processing procedures.
  • Initiate contact with government agencies to obtain necessary information and alert Senior Paralegal and/or attorney regarding potential process delays/problems.

Requirements

  • At least 1+ year(s) of U.S. corporate immigration experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree; 1-year law-related experience under a licensed attorney; or, PL certificate from ABA approved program.
  • Comfortable and able to thrive in a high-volume environment.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and ability to execute with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to catch errors and correct work of self and others.
  • Superior client service skills and ability to prioritize cases and tasks effectively.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and goals.
  • Proficient in MS Office and able to learn and navigate proprietary software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with document and data management systems.
