About the position

The Import Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the importation of goods and materials, ensuring compliance with regulations, and optimizing supply chain processes. This role involves coordinating with various departments to manage logistics, inventory, and transportation effectively, while also providing leadership and support to the import team.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Import Department and resolve internal issues.
  • Utilize a nationwide tracing system to monitor pending containers.
  • Track on-water transit and rail movement for LCL and FCL shipments.
  • Record daily status updates on shipments.
  • Contact consolidators or steamship lines upon arrival to ensure customs information is ready for customer release.
  • Gather information from origins and carriers to prepare arrival notices.
  • Coordinate with brokerage teams for customs clearance.
  • Work with CFS or steamship lines to handle original document requirements and payments post-clearance.
  • Maintain regular communication with customers regarding important milestones.
  • Audit daily shipment updates, including customs status and delivery information.
  • Review emails and assist team members with questions or issues.
  • Research and address customer complaints related to import sales and operations.
  • Negotiate import rates and services to enhance profitability and reduce costs.
  • Ensure proper training and cross-training of department staff.
  • Conduct interviews and recommend new hires.
  • Manage disciplinary actions and coaching for the Ocean Import department.
  • Implement corrective measures to uphold operational standards.
  • Partner with Accounting, Drayage, Warehouse, and Sales departments for effective operations.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • 3 years of experience in NVOCC (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier)
  • 3 years of experience in Freight Forwarding
  • 3 years of experience in Ocean Imports
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Knowledge of import/export regulations and customs processes
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and negotiate effectively
  • Proficiency in tracking systems and shipment management software
