About the position

The Income Tax Litigation Attorney (Technical Advisor II) position at the Illinois Department of Revenue involves representing the department in administrative protests and hearings related to income tax assessments, claim denials, and penalties. The role requires a strong understanding of litigation, civil procedure, and state and federal tax laws, providing an excellent opportunity for attorneys seeking hands-on litigation experience while contributing to fair and efficient tax administration.

Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze routine court case appeals, court rulings, tax statutes, and regulations to prepare for hearings.
  • Communicate with taxpayers, their representatives, and attorneys regarding the Income Tax Act and applicable case law.
  • Represent the Illinois Department of Revenue in litigation hearings and status conferences involving income tax disputes.
  • Collaborate with supervisors to resolve complex cases involving compliance and statutory interpretation.
  • Assist higher-level staff in conducting litigation cases and hearings related to taxes administered by IDOR.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a recognized law school.
  • Possession of a valid license to practice law in Illinois.
  • Two years of experience with judicial and quasi-judicial procedures and rules of evidence.
  • Two years of experience working on cases involving state and federal laws related to administrative functions.
  • Two years of litigation experience.
  • Two years of experience analyzing legal documents and preparing for administrative hearings.
  • Two years of experience organizing facts and presenting material in written form.
