About the position

Tallgrass is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Sr. Indirect Tax Accountant to assist in all aspects of indirect tax compliance and planning. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with tax regulations and implementing strategies to optimize indirect tax processes. This position involves preparing tax returns and payments related to Sales & Use Tax compliance, maintaining business license applications and renewals, issuing exemption certificates, and analyzing Sales & Use Tax GL Accounts. The accountant will also prepare reconciliations and tax reports to ensure accurate reporting of tax obligations. In addition to compliance tasks, the Sr. Indirect Tax Accountant will monitor the sales and use tax system to ensure correct rates and tax rules are applied, respond to inquiries from tax authorities, and assist with Sales and Use Tax audits as necessary. The role requires research for state or local tax planning alternatives to minimize the company's tax liability, including the preparation and presentation of alternatives to management. The accountant will collaborate with accounting and other departments on tax matters and will regularly use Excel spreadsheets, database and word processing software, while also learning new software programs as needed. The position demands excellent communication skills, as the accountant will interface with all levels of management and support financial responsibilities. The successful candidate will maintain a high level of performance, adhere to required work schedules, and focus on details while working independently and as part of a team. The role may require non-traditional hours and a commitment to personal safety and the safety of company assets and employees.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare tax returns and payments involved with Sales & Use Tax compliance.
  • Maintain business license applications and renewals.
  • Issue exemption certificates.
  • Analyze Sales & Use Tax GL Accounts and prepare accounts reconciliations and tax reports to ensure accurate reporting of tax.
  • Monitor the sales and use tax system to ensure correct rates and tax rules are applied.
  • Respond to correspondence and inquiries from tax authorities and resolve outstanding tax issues.
  • Assist with Sales and Use Tax audits, as necessary.
  • Assist with property tax payments.
  • Research state or local tax planning alternatives to minimize the company's tax liability, including preparation and presentation of alternatives to management.
  • Perform sales tax research using Checkpoint and other tax tools to keep entities up to date with legislative changes.
  • Collaborate with accounting and other departments on tax matters as required.
  • Regularly use Excel spreadsheets, database and word processing software, and periodically learn new software programs.
  • Interface with all levels of management to support financial responsibilities.
  • Complete ad hoc projects as assigned.
  • Interact with a wide variety of people with tact, courtesy and professionalism.
  • Maintain a regular, dependable attendance and a consistently high level of performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA or other relevant professional certification preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in indirect tax compliance and planning, preferably in a multinational corporation or public accounting firm.
  • In-depth knowledge of indirect tax laws and regulations, including VAT/GST, sales tax, and customs duties.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex tax regulations and apply them to business operations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate tax concepts to non-tax professionals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, tax software Vertex, and ERP systems, such as SAP or Oracle.
