The Indirect Tax Accountant is a vital role within Sun Communities, responsible for the accurate preparation and management of real estate and personal property tax budgets. This position involves quarterly adjustments, monthly reconciliations, accruals, and the preparation of property tax returns. The accountant will also provide essential support to the sales and use tax department, assisting team members in various aspects of sales and use tax compliance and reporting. In this role, the accountant will prepare the real estate and personal property tax budgets, ensuring that all quarterly adjustments are accurately reflected. They will be responsible for providing monthly accruals and reconciliations to the general ledger, which requires a keen eye for detail and strong analytical skills. The accountant will analyze assessment notices related to real and personal property to identify any necessary changes to the budget and will prepare personal property tax returns while assisting with property tax audits. Additionally, the Indirect Tax Accountant will acquire knowledge of property tax jurisdictions across the country, including processes for protest and appeal, to effectively assist with the budgeting process. They will handle inquiries and resolve property tax-related issues, prepare sales and use tax returns, and support the sales and use tax department during audits or other functions. Staying updated on tax law and internal policy changes is crucial to minimize tax liability, and the accountant may also be assigned other duties and special projects as needed.
