About the position

The Indirect Tax Accountant is a vital role within Sun Communities, responsible for the accurate preparation and management of real estate and personal property tax budgets. This position involves quarterly adjustments, monthly reconciliations, accruals, and the preparation of property tax returns. The accountant will also provide essential support to the sales and use tax department, assisting team members in various aspects of sales and use tax compliance and reporting. In this role, the accountant will prepare the real estate and personal property tax budgets, ensuring that all quarterly adjustments are accurately reflected. They will be responsible for providing monthly accruals and reconciliations to the general ledger, which requires a keen eye for detail and strong analytical skills. The accountant will analyze assessment notices related to real and personal property to identify any necessary changes to the budget and will prepare personal property tax returns while assisting with property tax audits. Additionally, the Indirect Tax Accountant will acquire knowledge of property tax jurisdictions across the country, including processes for protest and appeal, to effectively assist with the budgeting process. They will handle inquiries and resolve property tax-related issues, prepare sales and use tax returns, and support the sales and use tax department during audits or other functions. Staying updated on tax law and internal policy changes is crucial to minimize tax liability, and the accountant may also be assigned other duties and special projects as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares the real estate and personal property tax budgets and quarterly adjustments.
  • Provides the monthly real estate and personal property tax accruals and reconciliation to the general ledger.
  • Analyzes assessment notices on real and personal property to determine any changes to the budget.
  • Prepares personal property tax returns and assists with property tax audits.
  • Acquires knowledge of property tax jurisdictions throughout the country including protest and appeal processes to assist with the budget process.
  • Handles questions and resolutions of property tax-related issues.
  • Prepares sales & use tax returns.
  • Assists the sales & use tax department with tax audits or other functions.
  • Researches and stays abreast of tax law and internal policy and procedural changes to minimize tax liability.
  • Completes other duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting (Required)
  • 2 years tax experience in public accounting or equivalent
  • Ability to handle multiple competing high priority tasks
  • Advanced computer proficiency in Microsoft Excel, as well as the ability to use email and internet
  • Basic knowledge of tax concepts in a multi-entity/multi-state structure
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • General knowledge of fixed asset and tax return software
  • Strong attention to detail
