About the position

Lanco, a worldwide leader in industrial equipment manufacturing, is seeking an Indirect Tax Accountant to oversee and prepare all indirect tax returns, including the processes related to such tax filings. This role is crucial for ensuring compliance with tax regulations and will involve significant interaction with various stakeholders within the organization. After an introductory period, this position can transition into a hybrid role, primarily based on-site at our Homewood, IL location. The Indirect Tax Accountant will be responsible for the preparation and filing of all sales and use tax returns for both the U.S. and Canada, as well as all U.S. personal property tax returns. This includes handling real estate tax payments, monitoring tax assessment notices, and collaborating with outside advisors on any real estate tax appeals. The role also requires providing technical assistance to key stakeholders and identifying and recommending internal controls to standardize policies and procedures. The goal is to centralize, automate, and support the timely and accurate reporting of sales & use and personal property tax filings. Additionally, the Indirect Tax Accountant will manage external service providers, such as Avalara, and assist the State & Local Tax Manager with all sales & use tax audits. The ability to respond to tax notices and related correspondence is also a key responsibility of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation/filing of all sales and use tax returns (U.S. and Canada)
  • Preparation/filing of all U.S. personal property tax returns
  • Handling all real estate tax payments and monitoring tax assessments notices
  • Working with outside advisors on any real estate tax appeals
  • Providing technical assistance to key stakeholders
  • Identification and recommendation of internal controls to standardize policies and procedures
  • Managing external service providers (e.g., Avalara)
  • Assisting State & Local Tax Manager with all sales & use tax audits
  • Responding to tax notices and related correspondence

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting or Tax
  • 3-5 years of equivalent experience
  • Understanding of indirect taxes
  • Proven ability to research tax matters, communicate results, and recommend solutions
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders (i.e., operations, accounting, treasury) on tax matters
  • Understanding of the capabilities of, and hands-on experience with Avalara sales & use tax software
  • Detail-oriented, self-starter with the ability to multi-task and complete work timely and accurately
  • Ability to review processes and identify improvements to develop best practices
  • Strong written and communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft suite of products (i.e., Excel, Word)
  • Knowledge and experience working with different ERP systems
  • Proficiency working with CCH Fixed Asset Manager software
