About the position

The Industrial and Rolling Stock Maintenance position at Biewer of Lansing involves servicing and repairing machines and equipment throughout the facility to ensure production efficiency. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of mechanical systems and the ability to work with various types of machinery. The technician will be responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying production equipment and instrumentation in accordance with relevant codes and from blueprints, schematics, and sketches. This includes studying manufacturer manuals and directions when setting up machinery, as well as performing routine maintenance and cleaning tasks to ensure optimal operation. In this role, the technician will troubleshoot production equipment, including motors, gear boxes, drives, sprockets, chains, and belts, utilizing their mechanical aptitude to locate sources of issues by observing machinery in operation. The technician will also maintain an inventory of equipment, parts, and supplies, using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to locate parts in the storeroom when needed. Training production and maintenance employees on routine preventive maintenance is also a key responsibility, along with preparing maintenance reports by collecting data and summarizing information and trends. The position requires adherence to safety rules, policies, and precautions, including reporting and correcting unsafe work conditions. The technician will communicate with the electrical team and management regarding any equipment that is not operating properly and will be expected to safely operate shop tools such as lathes, drill presses, and grinders. Continuous improvement and innovation are encouraged, with the technician expected to provide ideas and suggestions for enhancing operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, repair and modify production equipment and instrumentation according to relevant codes and blueprints.
  • Study manufacturer manuals and directions when setting up machinery.
  • Clean, lubricate, and perform routine maintenance on machinery, disposing of defective parts as necessary.
  • Locate sources of issues by observing machinery in operation and test equipment repairs.
  • Set up calibration, pull wire, and align equipment such as OLI, canter, quad, TBL, gang, and trimmer.
  • Troubleshoot production equipment including motors, gear boxes, drives, sprockets, chains, and belts using mechanical aptitude.
  • Maintain inventory of equipment, parts, and supplies by checking stock and placing orders.
  • Use CMMS to locate parts in the storeroom when needed.
  • Train production and maintenance employees on routine preventive maintenance by workstation.
  • Prepare maintenance reports by collecting data and summarizing information and trends.
  • Review daily downtime and recommend/implement preventive maintenance routines.
  • Demonstrate rigging and lifting practices and observe all safety rules and policies.
  • Communicate with the electrical team and management regarding equipment that is not operating properly.
  • Safely operate shop tools such as lathe, drill press, and grinder.
  • Update scheduling systems, including adding notes and requesting work orders for maintenance repairs and activities.
  • Provide ideas and suggestions for continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • 2-3 years of previous lumber industry experience or industrial maintenance experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Mechanical knowledge with at least 2 years of experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and operating instructions.
  • Basic knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, torching, arc welding, and electrical principles.
  • Ability to safely operate forklift, scissor lift, and manual lift.
  • Mathematical skills to calculate figures and amounts using basic operations.
  • Good eye/hand coordination and reflexes.
  • Reasoning ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
