About the position

The University of Florida College of Medicine is seeking an experienced Industrial and Systems Engineer to join the Quality and Patient Safety Initiative (QPSi). This role is pivotal in advancing the science and practice of patient safety by integrating established industrial and systems engineering methods with innovative AI tools. The successful candidate will be a critical team member, contributing to a culture of creativity and forward-thinking within the QPSi team. The position involves leading AI-driven healthcare process improvement initiatives, collaborating with clinicians, data scientists, and quality improvement experts to design and implement predictive models, discrete event simulations, and agent-based modeling. The goal is to enhance clinical decision-making and healthcare operations at UF Health, ultimately improving patient safety and care quality. In this role, you will manage quality improvement initiatives and lead pilot projects focused on predicting and preventing adverse events. You will guide projects from inception to completion, ensuring measurable advancements in patient safety. Reporting to the Executive Director of QPSi, you will champion innovation and continuous improvement in healthcare solutions. Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage AI-driven process improvement initiatives, integrating AI into existing UF Health processes.
  • Collaborate with data scientists and clinicians to design and implement AI predictive models to enhance health system operations.
  • Supervise the entire project lifecycle, including defining scope, allocating resources, scheduling, initiating, designing, building, and deploying solutions.
  • Partner with biostatistics and AI teams to develop data-driven models of clinical operations.
  • Utilize various frameworks to better understand and improve clinical care at UF Health.
  • Develop and apply tools such as agent-based models, discrete event simulations, and reinforcement learning models to enhance clinical processes.
  • Assist in creating detailed project plans, including milestones and work breakdown structures.
  • Assign tasks to team members to ensure timely project completion according to specifications.
  • Prepare and present findings to key stakeholders, including executives and front-line clinicians.
  • Create presentations, analyses, and reports for leadership and program design reviews.
  • Present findings at regional, national, and international conferences.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of relevant experience in industrial or systems engineering, or a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and six years of relevant experience in industrial or systems engineering.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proven experience in project planning and management, with a clear command of presenting and guiding teams.
  • Experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and process optimization frameworks in a healthcare setting.
  • Working knowledge of process improvement methodologies, including Six Sigma, Lean, and Total Quality Management (TQM), with relevant certifications (Six Sigma Green/Black Belt preferred or interest in obtaining).
