About the position

Meta's Reality Labs team is at the forefront of shaping the future of consumer electronics, particularly in the burgeoning fields of Augmented and Virtual Reality. As an Industrial Design Architect on the Reality Labs ID team, you will play a pivotal role in bringing next-generation hardware and experiences to life. This position requires a blend of creative problem-solving and hands-on mechanical design skills to develop products that are not only functional but also delightful and holistically considered. You will leverage your experience in designing, engineering, and shipping consumer products to collaborate with cross-discipline teams effectively. Your responsibilities will include developing ergonomic solutions and addressing complex architectural challenges, as well as creating smile-inducing mechanisms and innovative manufacturing processes. You will work closely with the ID team to ensure that the products you help create are as amazing as the experiences they enable. A deep mechanical aptitude and a high degree of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) expertise will be essential as you transition ideas from conceptual stages to actionable plans. You will need to navigate between high-level experience concepts and detailed, functional prototypes that will inform product decisions and help the team achieve what may seem impossible. In this role, you will be expected to drive rapid mechanical design iteration and exploration, pushing the boundaries of physical technology integration and manufacturing processes. Your ability to create and refine effective solutions to complex ergonomic challenges will be crucial. You will also partner closely with Product Design Engineering and other internal teams to ensure alignment and expedite project progress. Additionally, you may leverage external partners to implement novel manufacturing solutions, and you should be prepared for international travel as required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with the Industrial Design team to create and prototype integrated mechanical/design solutions
  • Drive rapid mechanical design iteration, exploration, and evolution to deliver elegant, intuitive product solutions
  • Push the state of the art of physical technology integration and manufacturing processes
  • Create and refine effective ways to address complex ergonomic challenges
  • Bring a creative and pragmatic mindset to challenging technical problems to help the team create innovative yet feasible solutions
  • Partner closely with Product Design Engineering and other internal teams to align intent and rapidly move projects forward
  • Leverage external partners as needed to implement novel manufacturing solutions
  • Ability to travel internationally

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience developing consumer electronics or similar products
  • Experience leading technical projects and directing development activities
  • Expertise in creating high-fidelity mockups, mechanisms, and rapid prototypes
  • Experience designing plastic and metal parts for high volume manufacturing processes
  • Experience defining product level mechanical architectures
  • Expertise in 3D CAD modeling at the detail and assembly level in NX, Creo, or Solidworks, including complex surfacing
  • Experience working collaboratively with ID, ME, and EE teams
  • Proven communication, visualization, and problem solving skills
