About the position

Energetics - CLEAResult Energy Sustainability Consulting provides a full spectrum of clean energy consulting services to public and private sector clients. The Energetics team works with lead investors, innovators, and stakeholders to inform and expedite the development and market success of novel energy technologies, strategies, and practices that deliver a sustainable future. Energetics was founded in 1979 and joined CLEAResult in 2024 as a division within CLEAResult's Energy Sustainability Services business. In this role, the Industrial Energy Systems Equipment Engineer/Analyst will apply their passion for energy and sustainability in a collaborative and flexible work atmosphere. The ideal candidate will have experience and knowledge in industrial energy systems, including industrial heat pumps, thermal energy storage, and grid integration and power generation technologies. This position supports the Department of Energy's Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) Cross-Sector Technologies (CST) program, engaging in strategic planning, analysis, technical advising, and research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) program support. As part of the Energetics team, you will gain innovative knowledge and contribute towards technologies, policies, and R&D trends in industrial energy. The consultant will work in a highly collaborative atmosphere, interacting directly with government program managers and contributing to the development of impactful energy solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Acting as the technical subject matter expert for industrial energy systems, synthesizing and clearly communicating results of research related to energy systems applications in industrial sectors to colleagues and clients through formal and informal presentations and written technical communications (reports, white papers, fact sheets, briefings, journal articles, etc.).
  • Supports the planning and management of the Industrial Process Heating and Emerging Technologies RD&D portfolio.
  • Leads small research projects and provides project management support for federal clients.
  • Works independently or as a member of a team; leads small teams on research projects.
  • Contributes to strategic plan of federal government technical programs (proposed or in progress) with respect to goals and objectives, implementation plans, and budget allocations.
  • Takes technical information and develops clear planning and summary documents.
  • Develops and implements performance metrics for client projects and programs.
  • Works closely with program managers and co-workers in a fast-paced collaborative team environment (diligent and responsive contributor).
  • Advises on industry-relevant demonstration opportunities for decarbonization via energy systems technologies and processes across related fields and sectors.
  • Collects and tracks program and project information and milestones; summarizes results in draft reports.
  • Analyzes global market and technology developments, trends, and statistics (energy, carbon, and economics).
  • Acts as a liaison between scientists at universities/laboratories and government decision-makers to assist in distilling key technical results and potential impacts from R&D.
  • Supports in-person and virtual meetings and workshops with clients and stakeholders, including but not limited to preparing meeting materials, scheduling meetings, facilitating technical discussions, and summarizing proceedings.
  • Assists clients in the preparation of technical reports required by the agency hierarchy, by Congress, or by the Administration.
  • Assists clients in the preparation of technical materials designed to educate or inform the public.
  • Occasional travel to participate in technical conferences and interact with the technical community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering required (chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar engineering degree).
  • 7 years' experience with a bachelor's degree or 5 years' experience with a Master's degree required.
  • Familiar with IEDO programs and relevant technical topics specifically Cross Sector Technologies / emerging technologies RD&D portfolio.
  • Experience in industrial energy systems, including industrial operation of such systems (e.g., industrial heat pumps, energy storage, power generation); experience or knowledge in grid integration; research of operations or new technologies, equipment development and engineering; and industrial process engineering.
  • Excellent communication skills, including strong technical writing skills and an ability to tailor written and verbal communications for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A strong interest in pursuing work in the area of manufacturing, industrial sector decarbonization, and the clean energy transition.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; advanced analytical and Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to excel when working on self-managed tasks and as a member of a team.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Ability to balance multiple long- and short-term projects and competing priorities.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security or clearance badge.

  • Strong ability/interest in making connections and building collaborations.
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency or energy management systems in industrial or commercial facilities.
  • Experience with complex enterprise architectures and securing complex enterprise architectures is preferred.
  • Master's or PhD degrees in science and engineering degrees are a plus, but not required.
  • Candidates with years of experience greater than the minimum are also encouraged to apply.
  • Experience in government consulting, supporting government organizations, public-private partnerships, or stakeholder engagement.
  • Proficient in running web meeting platforms, e.g., Teams, Zoom, GoToMeeting, WebEx.
  • Technical publications in the field of energy systems, power generation, thermal processing equipment, or thermal energy management.
