About the position

The position of Industrial Engineer is a critical role within Abbott's Infectious Disease Developed Markets business unit located in Westbrook, Maine. In this capacity, you will be tasked with optimizing the utilization of personnel, processes, and equipment within Operations. This involves applying Lean Sigma tools to develop future manufacturing layouts, which will include process flow development, value stream mapping, time studies, line balancing, and waste reduction strategies, both in terms of material and labor. You will also be responsible for updating and developing standard work procedures, analyzing headcount versus capacity models, and incorporating the 14 Step lean methodology and Management Operating System (MOS) into the facility's infrastructure. Your efforts will directly contribute to improving quality, cost, safety, and delivery performance in operations by leveraging lean fundamentals. As an Industrial Engineer, you will need to possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as proficiency in project management and mathematical modeling. A solid understanding of Lean principles, Six Sigma, and other improvement methodologies is essential. You will be expected to work effectively both within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment. Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary to effectively convey information at multiple levels within the organization. This role is pivotal in ensuring that Abbott continues to deliver high-quality healthcare solutions efficiently and effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Optimize the utilization of personnel, processes, and equipment within Operations.
  • Apply Lean Sigma tools for future manufacturing layouts, including process flow development and value stream mapping.
  • Conduct time studies and line balancing to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Implement waste reduction strategies for both material and labor.
  • Update and develop standard work procedures to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Analyze headcount versus capacity models to optimize workforce utilization.
  • Incorporate 14 Step lean methodology and Management Operating System (MOS) into facility infrastructure.
  • Improve quality, cost, safety, and delivery performance in operations using lean fundamentals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Industrial or Mechanical Engineering preferred) or equivalent technical experience.
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification to coach and mentor Green Belt teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in project management and mathematical modeling.
  • Knowledge of Lean principles, Six Sigma, and other improvement methodologies.
  • Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least 3 years' experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification.
  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI.
  • Familiarity with overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) data management and statistical process control (SPC).
  • Experience with financial budgets and standards.
  • High degree of technical expertise and familiarity with manufacturing processes.
  • Strong communication, leadership, problem-solving, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
