About the position

MasTec's Clean Energy and Infrastructure Group (CE&I) is a $4 billion annual revenue business unit that provides construction services for industrial facilities, including power generation facilities, manufacturing plants, and renewable energy plants. The Project Engineer role is crucial within this framework, focusing on overseeing and executing project controls and management across multiple disciplines. This position involves direct support to a Project Manager or Senior Project Engineer, handling responsibilities such as quantity collection, contract administration, project planning and scheduling, procurement, and project reporting. The Project Engineer will interface with various stakeholders, including clients, engineering/design teams, subcontractors, and vendors, ensuring effective communication regarding project status. The Project Engineer will manage a majority of the field office staff, which may include engineers, document control personnel, schedulers, and procurement staff. They will represent the company professionally in all client interactions and provide contract-required reports on a weekly and monthly basis. Adherence to safety plans is paramount, and the Project Engineer will create quantity calculation formulas to determine the percentage of completed materials. They will also develop processes for work plans and ensure that quality plans are communicated and documented appropriately. In addition to managing daily labor timesheets and average labor rates, the Project Engineer will train staff on Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and participate in safety meetings. Responsibilities also include ordering materials, scheduling deliveries, performing material takeoffs, and conducting basic engineering calculations to support field operations. The Project Engineer will oversee procurement and subcontract administration, manage project recordkeeping, and create project controls to monitor productivity and costs. They will also lead the budgeting process and establish cash flow forecasts to ensure positive project cash flow. This role may require extensive travel and relocation for project assignments, typically lasting 6-12 months.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage a majority of the field office staff, including engineers, office manager, document control, schedulers, procurement, and warehouse personnel.
  • Represent the company professionally in all client interaction activities.
  • Provide the client with contract-required reports on a weekly and monthly basis.
  • Understand and follow the Corporate Safety Plan and site-specific safety plan.
  • Create quantity calculation formulas to accurately determine the percentage of completed/installed materials.
  • Develop a process for the creation and review of work plans and work packages.
  • Ensure the site quality plan is communicated and all inspections and quality documentation are completed on time.
  • Manage the compilation, processing, and customer approval of daily labor timesheets.
  • Compile and distribute weekly the Average Labor Rate to front-line supervision.
  • Train craft and staff employees on how to complete Job Safety Analysis (JSA's).
  • Participate in or lead jobsite safety reviews, toolbox meetings, and safety training.
  • Order and schedule material deliveries and develop procurement status reports.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate work groups on the jobsite.
  • Perform material takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and other contract documents.
  • Perform basic engineering calculations and technical drafting to support field operations.
  • Direct Field Engineers to gather and prepare data for submittal or transmittal to customers, vendors, subcontractors, and governmental agencies.
  • Manage the creation and review of field-issued purchase orders and subcontracts, and prepare material buyout takeoffs from issued construction drawings.
  • Provide field support and supervise subcontractor operations.
  • Manage all project recordkeeping and correspondence functions, including daily reports, photographs, RFIs, submittals, and other contract-required correspondence.
  • Create and monitor project controls such as productivity tracking, scheduling, risk, and opportunity logs.
  • Create and maintain the master project schedule.
  • Generate change orders and as-built data for review by the Project Manager.
  • Drive the planning process through the master schedule and manpower curves.
  • Assist the Project Manager with accounting, job costs, and work in progress updates.
  • Lead the budgeting process and convert estimates to standard phase codes.
  • Alert the Project Manager and Home Office of trends regarding costs.
  • Manage the cost forecasting process for the entire project.
  • Establish the cash flow forecast and curve to ensure positive cash flow for the project.
  • Act as the primary company representative in the absence of the Project Manager or Project Engineer.
  • Know all provisions, terms, and scope of the Prime contract.
  • Develop and prepare Schedule of Values and all invoices to the customer.
  • Manage, lead, and mentor direct reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as a Field Engineer or similar role on heavy industrial projects.
  • Knowledge of MIC Health and Safety programs and project-specific regulations.
  • Ability to participate in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to ethics and integrity.
  • Ability to delegate work and provide support to meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Willingness to travel extensively and relocate for project assignments.
