About the position

The Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards is seeking an experienced Occupational Safety and Health Professional to join the Enforcement team. This role involves investigating workplace injuries and ensuring compliance with OSHA standards in public sector workplaces. The inspector will work independently on multiple cases, respond to industrial accidents, and conduct inspections across various settings, including healthcare and public works.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate injuries and inspect workplaces for compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Conduct injury investigations, including amputation, electric shock, falls, and fatality investigations.
  • Respond to complaints regarding workplace safety and health conditions.
  • Conduct workplace violence prevention inspections in healthcare, corrections, and education settings.
  • Prepare documentation and issue Civil Citations for injury prevention and compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Track employer responses to confirm that corrective actions have been abated.
  • Maintain documentation for a complete inspection case file for compliance with DLS and OSHA State Plan requirements.
  • Represent the agency at hearings and attend monthly staff meetings and mandatory trainings.
  • Communicate effectively in oral expression and in writing, and proficiently use Microsoft Office applications.

Requirements

  • At least three years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in safety engineering, industrial hygiene, inspection, or investigatory work related to occupational safety/health standards.
  • One year of experience in a professional capacity.
  • Access to a properly inspected, registered, and insured personal automobile, and possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to pass an annual medical evaluation to wear respiratory or other breathing apparatus.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification from the EPA and other necessary agencies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist or Certified Safety Professional.
  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in relevant fields may substitute for required experience.
