About the position

The Infant Paraprofessional position at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is a vital role within the B.E. Smith Family Center, specifically designed to support children from birth through six years of age with special needs. This position is integral to the early intervention program, where the paraprofessional assists teachers, therapists, and other team members in fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for children with disabilities. The role involves direct interaction with children, providing essential support in both classroom and therapeutic settings, ensuring that each child can develop their cognitive, communication, self-help, social, motor, and sensory processing skills to their fullest potential. In this role, the paraprofessional will be responsible for assisting with various self-care routines, including diapering, feeding, toilet training, and hand washing. They will also help classroom teachers prepare materials and equipment, organize the classroom, and maintain a clean and hygienic environment. The paraprofessional may substitute for teachers or other paraprofessionals when necessary and participate in therapy sessions and parent conferences as appropriate. Collaboration with the director, manager, and social worker is essential to support individual child and family needs, as well as to access community resources. The position requires a commitment to maintaining professional relationships with co-workers, being considerate of workloads, and supporting each other's growth. Effective communication is crucial, as is the ability to adapt to the dynamic nature of the work environment. The paraprofessional will also be expected to uphold confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA guidelines while providing quality care tailored to the unique needs of each child.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support to children under the supervision of the ECSE, PT, OT, SLP, MT, and BCBA.
  • Assist with self-care routines including diapering, feeding, toilet training, and hand washing.
  • Assist classroom teachers to prepare materials and equipment, organize the classroom and storage areas.
  • Substitute for teachers and/or paraprofessionals when they are absent.
  • Participate in therapy sessions and parent conferences as appropriate.
  • Support the operations of the Britain Development by helping to maintain a clean and hygienic environment.
  • Collaborate with director, manager, and/or social worker to support individual child and family needs and accessing community resources.
  • Train and educate students, interns, volunteers, and patient's family members.
  • Maintain a professional team relationship with co-workers by being considerate of workloads and assisting with duties.
  • Communicate honestly and confront issues and problems in a private setting.
  • Return phone calls and emails in a timely manner, and be punctual for scheduled work hours, meetings, and patient treatment.
  • Utilize computer access confidentially, appropriately and following HIPAA guidelines.
  • Provide quality patient care skills/procedures in a manner that takes into account the special needs of the patient.
  • Demonstrate ability to adapt to constant changes in schedule and environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent is required.
  • No previous experience is required.
  • Communication skills are essential.
  • Technologically competent.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
  • 1 to 2 years of position-related experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of disabilities and child and family development is preferred.
  • First Aid Certification is preferred.
  • HeartSaver or BLS CPR certification through American Heart Association is preferred.
