About the position

The position is located in the Strategic Planning and Communications Service (SPCS) within the Office of the Under-Secretary-General of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The incumbent will manage projects related to the development and implementation of computer information systems, providing specialized advice and support to users, and ensuring the integration and security of systems. This role involves troubleshooting, user training, and contributing to the ICT governance function within the department.

Responsibilities

  • Manage projects involving feasibility studies, systems analysis, design, development, and implementation of new systems.
  • Provide specialized advice to users, analyzing requirements and translating them into applications.
  • Maintain, upgrade, or enhance existing user systems and provide ongoing user support.
  • Develop and maintain computer programs that require integration of interrelated systems and ensure data security.
  • Organize and perform unit and integrated testing, assisting users in acceptance testing.
  • Develop training materials and manuals, and train staff in assigned systems.
  • Develop disaster recovery plans and ensure appropriate planning and training.
  • Research, analyze, and evaluate new technologies and make recommendations for deployment.
  • Participate in writing reports and papers on systems-related topics and information strategy.
  • Provide guidance to and may supervise new/junior staff and consultants.
  • Collect and analyze data to identify trends and provide insights using data visualization methods.
  • Support efforts to enhance the ICT governance function in the Department.

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree (Masters degree or equivalent) in computer science, information systems, mathematics, statistics, or related field.
  • A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in planning, design, development, implementation, and maintenance of computer information systems.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in cloud architecture and infrastructure.
  • Experience in programming languages such as PHP, Python, and C#.
  • Experience with web content management systems such as Drupal and MySQL database.
  • Experience with relational database management systems (MSSQL) and .NET application development framework is desirable.
  • Experience in cloud solutions certification in AWS or Azure is desirable.
  • Two years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Successful completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science programs is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of French is desirable.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
