About the position

The Information Technology Tech I position serves as a junior systems support specialist within the Office of Elections IT department. This role involves working independently while also taking direction from analysts and the IT manager. The incumbent may lead lower-graded staff or seasonal employees performing similar tasks. The primary responsibility is to provide Level 1 technical support to agency users, addressing problems of low to moderate complexity. This includes assisting users in identifying their information system needs and implementing appropriate solutions. The position requires troubleshooting and resolving various hardware, software, and system-related issues within a large and distributed enterprise environment. In addition to technical support, the role involves installing, configuring, maintaining, testing, and repairing agency hardware, software, systems, and networks. The technician will construct, install, and test custom configurations for various platforms and operating systems, including Windows and iPadOS. Collaboration with the county's IT department and third parties is essential for coordinating the security, design, installation, maintenance, and support of agency-related hardware and network components. The technician will also be responsible for creating basic queries, reports, and dashboards using business intelligence tools, adhering to established frameworks and standards. The position requires a proactive approach to monitoring network components for inventory purposes, assisting in the installation and configuration of PC and network systems, and providing help desk and inventory control support. The technician will also be responsible for collecting data on system events and performance for reporting and analysis purposes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Level 1 technical support to agency users for low to moderate complexity problems.
  • Assist users in determining information system needs and implementing solutions.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software, and system-related issues.
  • Install, configure, maintain, test, and repair agency hardware, software, systems, and networks.
  • Construct, install, and test custom configurations for various platforms and operating systems.
  • Coordinate with the county's IT department and third parties for security and maintenance of hardware and network components.
  • Create basic queries, reports, and dashboards using business intelligence tools.
  • Monitor network components for inventory purposes.
  • Assist in installing, configuring, upgrading, and administering PC and network systems.
  • Provide help desk and inventory control support.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education.
  • One year of specialized experience or two years of general experience in installation and troubleshooting of personal computers and network systems, or an associate's degree in computer science or related field.
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide one-on-one training and support to computer users.
  • Ability to troubleshoot personal computer and network systems, both software and hardware problems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals for assembly, installation, repair, and operation of computers and data communications equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to identify possible solutions for IT problems.
  • Experience working in a medium to large help desk supporting end users.
  • One year of work experience in troubleshooting hardware and software.
  • Experience with elections specific equipment and software, such as the Virginia Election and Registration Information System (VERIS).
  • Understanding of election office operations and related technologies.
  • Ability to form collaborative partnerships across agency lines and county agencies.
  • Excellent customer service and time management skills.
  • Ability to work additional hours during election periods.
