About the position

The Information Technology Technician I position is a temporary part-time role focused on supporting the Open Labs Help Desk at the Stanton Campus in Newark, DE. The incumbent will work under the guidance of higher-level technicians, assisting with various tasks related to the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of computers and software. In this position, the technician will be responsible for assisting with the installation and configuration of on-site computers, upgrades, and peripherals such as printers and hard drives. They will also troubleshoot routine hardware and software issues, communicating effectively with users to identify problems and providing solutions when possible. If issues cannot be resolved, the technician will refer them to a supervisor for further assistance. Additionally, the role involves assisting with the installation of wiring for campus communication networks and providing technical support to faculty, staff, and students as needed. The technician will maintain work order records and documentation to track recurring problems, ensuring a historical reference for future troubleshooting. They will also manage the computer equipment inventory and utilize databases to track software acquisitions and licensing information. This position may require performing other related duties as assigned, making it a versatile role within the IT department.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the installation and configuration of on-site computers, upgrades, and peripherals, e.g. printers, hard drives, CD-ROMs, PC boards, etc.
  • Troubleshoots routine computer hardware and software problems, communicating with users to determine the exact nature of the issue.
  • Assists with installing wiring for campus communications networks according to industry standard techniques.
  • Provides technical assistance to faculty, staff, and students as needed.
  • Maintains work order records and other necessary documentation to provide historical reference of recurring problems.
  • Maintains computer equipment inventory and tracks software acquisition and license information.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software.
  • Knowledge of the policies and procedures relating to College information systems.
  • Skill in installing hardware and software.
  • Skill in troubleshooting hardware and software problems.
  • Ability to determine feasibility and application of new technological developments to existing operations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
