About the position

The Information Technology Technician at Wayland Baptist University (WBU) is a vital role responsible for advising staff on various aspects of technology, including computers, networking, data security, electronic messaging, telephony, and data management. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving, as the technician will consult with staff and supervisors to address issues related to equipment performance, output quality, and work schedules. The technician will also play a key role in maintaining the network infrastructure, data servers, Exchange server, and web servers, ensuring that the local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) effectively support the campus operations. In addition to network maintenance, the technician will assist in programming and maintaining the campus's general website and electronic board website. This includes programming necessary source code changes, performing backups of system databases, and ensuring the integrity of web applications. The technician will also monitor and maintain all telephony equipment and operations on campus and at external sites under the university's control. The role involves collaborating with supervisors to meet data management needs and updating websites as required. Specific tasks include gathering information from various sources, establishing and maintaining constructive relationships with students and staff, planning and prioritizing responsibilities, and communicating effectively with all levels of the university. The technician will provide technical expertise for campus technology applications, evaluate software applications for efficiency, and suggest improvements as needed. Furthermore, the technician will design, develop, document, and test computer systems or programs based on user specifications, ensuring that all applications are documented according to industry standards. The technician will also provide IT support for the Lackland Air Force Base National Testing Center and assist in long-term technology planning and disaster recovery plans for the campus. This role requires a commitment to continuous learning and professional development, as the technician will attend classes, seminars, and conferences to stay updated on trends in programming and technology.

Responsibilities

  • Advise staff on matters related to computers, networking, data security, electronic messaging, telephony, and data management.
  • Consult with staff and supervisors to resolve problems related to equipment performance and work schedules.
  • Maintain the network, data servers, Exchange server, and web server for the campus.
  • Program and maintain the general campus website and electronic board website.
  • Monitor and maintain all telephony equipment and operations on campus and external sites.
  • Assist supervisors with data management needs and website updates.
  • Evaluate software applications for efficiency and suggest improvements or modifications as needed.
  • Design, develop, document, analyze, create, test, debug, and modify computer systems or programs based on user specifications.
  • Provide IT support for the Lackland Air Force Base National Testing Center.
  • Assist in preparing long and short-range technology planning and implementing IT services for campus end-users.
  • Help plan and implement IT disaster recovery plans for the campus.
  • Create help files and user manuals to support applications and end-users.
  • Attend classes, seminars, and conferences to enhance knowledge of programming trends.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree or experience in a related field required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Two to three years of information technology support experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience working with and maintaining Microsoft Exchange Servers.
  • Experience working with and maintaining network servers and telephony operations.
  • Knowledge of web design with emphasis on active server page programming and dynamic linking to databases.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize and complete projects in a timely manner.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a university administration setting, preferably in a student records office or registrar office.
  • Knowledge of programming, project management, development, and implementation.
  • Familiarity with the University Power Campus, Great Plains, and Power Fades programs.
