About the position

The Infrastructure Drafter will be responsible for creating and updating accurate infrastructure drawings and designs for various projects within the university's IT department. This role involves close collaboration with the Communications Infrastructure team to ensure that infrastructure plans and designs align with project requirements and industry standards. The drafter will utilize drafting software and tools to produce detailed and precise infrastructure drawings, contributing to the successful implementation of infrastructure projects. By ensuring that UCLA's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective, the drafter will positively impact the university's operations and culture, supporting its academic mission. This team member will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. The Infrastructure Drafter will execute UCLA's vision while modeling the university's culture and values.

Responsibilities

  • Create and update accurate infrastructure drawings and designs for various projects within the university's IT department.
  • Collaborate closely with the Communications Infrastructure team to ensure alignment of infrastructure plans and designs with project requirements and industry standards.
  • Utilize drafting software and tools to produce detailed and precise infrastructure drawings.
  • Contribute to the successful implementation of infrastructure projects.
  • Ensure that UCLA's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university's academic mission.
  • Deliver exceptional information technology services across faculty, staff, and students.

Requirements

  • One year experience working in network services, field services, information technology, or network operations, or a related field.
  • Experience in drafting and documenting various infrastructure types, including data centers, network layouts, telecommunications systems, and electrical distributions using appropriate drafting techniques/tools.
  • Strong understanding of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software functionalities, such as layer management, dimensioning, and object manipulation.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure components and equipment, including network devices, server racks, cable trays, and HVAC systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve complex network issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to communicate ideas clearly.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships and a strong rapport with team members and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize project needs.
  • Experience working in a project-based environment using project management practices.
  • Ability to support an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

Nice-to-haves

  • Three years or more experience working in network services, field services, information technology, or network operations.
  • Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic and administrative functions of a large public university.
  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science, engineering, computer information systems, or a related field.
