About the position

At USAA, we are dedicated to facilitating the financial security of millions of U.S. military members and their families. As a Mid Level Infrastructure Engineer, you will be part of the Provider Edge Networking Team within USAA's Shared Services and Infrastructure Office. This role involves working with cutting-edge technologies that support both the USAA workforce and our members, ensuring that we deliver outstanding service and support to the Association. Your primary responsibilities will include creating, modifying, maintaining, and supporting infrastructure and integrated system components that enable business functions and IT services. You will be tasked with balancing availability, security, efficiency, and functional requirements to optimize production services. Additionally, you will identify and manage existing and emerging risks associated with business activities, ensuring they are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled. In this position, you will work under limited supervision to design scalable IT system infrastructure, implement system changes consistently, and automate service delivery and maintenance tasks. You will also build monitoring and tooling for systems, resolve complex technology production issues, and analyze outages to identify opportunities for system improvements. Your role will require you to understand engineering best practices and concepts, evaluate potential technology solutions, and mentor junior engineers. You will also develop software-defined infrastructure in code within CI/CD pipelines, ensuring compliance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Design scalable IT system infrastructure under limited supervision.
  • Implement system changes with consistency and autonomy.
  • Automate service delivery and maintenance tasks.
  • Build monitoring and tooling for systems.
  • Independently resolve complex technology production issues by troubleshooting IT systems.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements and make recommendations to management.
  • Analyze complex outages and identify opportunities for system improvements.
  • Understand and consistently exercise engineering best practices, concepts, and patterns.
  • Evaluate potential technology solutions with some oversight.
  • Mentor junior engineers and may begin mentoring peer engineers.
  • Develop software-defined infrastructure in code in CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or 4 additional years of experience beyond the minimum requirement can be used in lieu of a degree OR Approved certification from CodeUp, Galvanize, VetFIT (Veterans for IT) or eFIT (Employees for IT).
  • 4 years of infrastructure experience demonstrating depth of technical understanding within a specific discipline(s)/technology(s) or applicable IT experience such as IT Management, Software Development, Data Engineering, and Agile Product/Release Management.
  • 2 years of experience in creating, modifying, and maintaining infrastructure and individual system components.
  • Proficient level of business acumen in the areas of business operations, risk management, industry practices and emerging trends.
  • Knowledge and understanding of designing scalable IT system infrastructures, implementing system changes, or automating service delivery and maintenance tasks.
  • Basic understanding of cloud technologies and tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Extensive hands-on troubleshooting experience in an enterprise environment.
  • Strong technical expertise with Cisco and/or Arista platform network solutions.
  • In-depth knowledge of networking and routing protocols: OSPF, BGP, MPLS, LLDP, VxLAN, Fabric Path, QoS, IPSec, DMVPN, GRE, NAT, and MACSEC.
  • Experience working with intermediary systems, packet captures and analysis software: Netbrain, Wireshark, Ethereal, Netscout (Infinistream, Pulse), Gigastor observer.
  • Familiarity with cloud networking vendors such as AWS, Azure, Google.
  • Knowledge of Telecom service delivery mechanisms and carrier transmission systems (e.g. T1 through 100Gb).
  • ITIL process awareness.
