About the position

At USAA, we are dedicated to facilitating the financial security of millions of U.S. military members and their families. As a dedicated Infrastructure Engineer Staff, you will play a crucial role in creating designs and architecture that support cross-domain business capabilities. This enterprise role involves collaboration with engineers and business users across all lines of business, working closely with technologists from various domains and the Chief Technology Office. Your focus will be on developing architecture for data and analytics platforms and applications, which may include on-premise, private, and public cloud solutions. You will be responsible for intentional architecture and will provide mentorship on emergent architecture to technical teams. In this position, you will have hands-on experience in cloud architectures, including SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS, and a deep interest in broad enterprise platforms and cloud patterns. Your responsibilities will include creating, modifying, and maintaining infrastructure and individual system components that enable business functions and IT services. You will balance availability, security, efficiency, and functional requirements to provide optimized production services. Additionally, you will identify and manage existing and emerging risks stemming from business activities, ensuring these risks are effectively identified and escalated for measurement, monitoring, and control. We offer a flexible work environment that requires you to be in the office four days a week, with positions available in San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, or Phoenix, AZ. Please note that relocation assistance is not available for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the design and implementation of scalable infrastructure across tech domains.
  • Creates and enforces standards for system change across a department, reserving execution for the most complex implementations.
  • Influences service delivery and maintenance tasks automation across multiple domains.
  • Guides monitoring, observability, and tooling at the portfolio level.
  • Identifies and addresses production issue trends and establishes troubleshooting methodologies.
  • Provides real-time complex troubleshooting support at the tech domain level for major incidents.
  • Influences department priority of experiments with new patterns and technologies.
  • Determines engineering best practices, concepts, and patterns at the domain level.
  • Serves as a trusted advisor to customers, helping evaluate solutions and ideas.
  • Partners with key stakeholders to lead the evaluation of potential solutions.
  • Mentors and coaches experienced engineers, providing business inputs and feedback to leadership.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field of study; OR 4 years of related experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree.
  • 10 years of infrastructure experience demonstrating depth of technical understanding within multiple disciplines/technologies, including 3 years of demonstrated technical leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of emerging and/or evolution of existing technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to act on all phases of the technology lifecycle.
  • 8 years of experience in creating, modifying, and maintaining infrastructure and individual system components.
  • Mastery of complex system and environment analysis, design, and optimization.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully partnering with business teams and leaders to design and manage highly available, complex, secure, enterprise infrastructure.
  • Expert level of business acumen in business operations, risk management, industry practices, and emerging trends.
  • Knowledge and advanced understanding of designing scalable IT system infrastructures, implementing system changes, or automating service delivery and maintenance tasks.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing and maintaining multi-cloud technologies and solutions.

Nice-to-haves

  • 5+ years of experience establishing partnerships and providing guidance with vendors for vendor applications and tools.
  • Extensive experience with impact analysis, technical assessments with CTO, and identifying opportunities for system integrations.
  • Hands-on experience with USAA's deployment patterns, SRE concepts, and general IT standards.
  • 5+ years of CI/CD pipeline automation experience.
  • 8+ years designing scalable IT infrastructure.
  • Hands-on experience with platform deployments.
  • Large and small batch environment infrastructure design experience.
  • Deep understanding of public cloud infrastructure design.
