About the position

The Infrastructure Specialist is responsible for planning, designing, and directing the integration of network systems into the overall network structure of the client. This role involves maintaining network and file servers, providing high-level technical support, and developing innovative solutions for network systems. The specialist will oversee daily operations, ensure security of data, and assist in the design and configuration of telecommunications systems.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the day-to-day operation of computer networks including hardware/software support, training, and special projects.
  • Provides planning, leadership, direction, and technical expertise to the campus on local and wide area network services and systems.
  • Maintains network documentation including hardware/software applications, support logs, and other related information.
  • Monitors usage to ensure security of data and access privileges; installs, supports, and maintains both physical and virtual network servers and appliances.
  • Maintains and updates Active Directory, Exchange, and VMware cluster.
  • Assists in installing, designing, configuring, and maintaining system hardware and software; analyzes and troubleshoots the network logs and tracks the nature and resolution of problems.
  • Develops, maintains, and implements network support and archiving procedures.
  • Performs/recommends back-up procedures for servers.
  • Maintains, monitors, and configures Network Storage (SAN).
  • Identifies and coordinates all local campus network application services.
  • Provides advice and assistance and serves as a key resource person to system and campus administrators concerning network services facilities.
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
  • Plans, recommends, and assists in the design of telecommunications systems; analyzes and updates VOIP network system.
  • Researches and recommends telecommunications equipment; coordinates the ordering and installation of telecommunications and data systems equipment and cabling.
  • Participates in strategic and long-range planning for campus network services; analyzes clients' needs regarding use of network equipment and services.
  • Recommends network acquisitions (hardware and software) with cost estimates.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 6 years of experience directly related to the duties specified, or a Master's degree with at least 4 years of experience.
  • Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in computer networking.
  • Ability to plan and guide the development, installation, maintenance, and repair of computer network systems and servers.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Knowledge of VMware, Exchange, Active Directory, and Linux.
  • Ability to prioritize requests, organize, schedule, and coordinate a variety of activities and projects in a deadline-oriented environment.
  • Ability to identify and resolve network system malfunctions and operational problems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a diverse community.
  • Strong commitment to customer service.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined to accomplish goals with a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.

  • Familiarity with ITIL practices.
