About the position

The Inpatient and Clinic Nephrology Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant position at the University of Rochester involves providing direct patient care in nephrology services. The role focuses on managing patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), acute kidney injury, and those undergoing kidney transplantation. The practitioner will work in a team environment, coordinating care and ensuring smooth transitions from inpatient to outpatient settings, while also participating in the education of learners.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluation and management of patients with ESRD who need ongoing dialysis therapy, including writing dialysis orders and coordinating care with other inpatient services.
  • Management of patients with acute kidney injury, electrolyte disorders, and disorders of volume and blood pressure, including prescription of dialysis and CVVHDF when appropriate.
  • Evaluation and management of patients pre and post kidney transplantation, including management of immunosuppressant medications and their complications.
  • Billing for services provided.
  • Shifts in general nephrology clinic seeing hospital follow-up patients, CKD follow-up visits, and other appropriate follow-up patients.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field and an active New York State license in good standing for Nurse Practitioners.
  • Completion of an AMA approved Physician Assistant program, licensure in good standing, and certification as a Registered Physician Assistant for Physician Assistants.
  • 5 years experience as an RN with one to three years of leadership experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience for Nurse Practitioners.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence, superior verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal effectiveness, and customer relation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in nephrology or related fields.
  • Knowledge of continuous quality improvement initiatives.
