About the position

The Inpatient Coder 1 position at Jackson Health System involves reviewing clinical documentation in inpatient health records to accurately assign and sequence ICD-9 diagnostic and procedure codes. The position is remote and requires a commitment to maintaining coding accuracy and compliance with healthcare regulations.

Responsibilities

• Review clinical documentation in inpatient health records to assign ICD-9 diagnostic and procedure codes.
• Ensure all accounts are coded correctly for accurate MS-DRG or APR-DRG reimbursement.
• Code all accounts within 4 days of the patient's discharge date, meeting productivity standards according to AHIMA Guidelines.
• Verify patient information to identify discrepancies and ensure accurate coding.
• Serve as a quality reviewer while coding, identifying any documents not belonging to the patient.
• Ensure accuracy in using appropriate modifiers during coding.
• Assess documentation and query physicians for additional information when necessary.
• Utilize all codes to reflect the care rendered to ensure patient safety and accurate reimbursement.
• Recognize and report unusual circumstances or risk factors to the Coding Associate Administrator or Coding Director.
• Meet continuing education requirements established by AHIMA or AAPC to maintain certification and competency.
• Participate in ICD-10-CM-PCS education sessions provided by JHS and other approved entities.
• Adhere to Standards of Excellence and respect confidentiality according to HIPAA guidelines.

Requirements

• 0 to 3 years of related experience required.
• At least one year of prior acute care coding experience is highly preferred.
• High School diploma is required.
• Must be credentialed with HIM/Coding Credentials and/or Certification by AHIMA or AAPC.
