The Psychologist will assess and treat patients with physical disabilities resulting from traumatic injuries or illnesses, assisting them in coping with the emotional reactions to their disabilities. This role is integral to the treatment team on the designated inpatient floor, and the psychologist will receive an academic appointment at Northwestern Medicine - Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department based on their academic, research, and clinical experience. The psychologist will conduct interviews with patients, families, and other relevant personnel to gather comprehensive information regarding the patient's personal, medical, psychiatric, substance use, and social history. They will perform psychological and neuropsychological evaluations and provide consultation and therapeutic interventions for individuals, families, and groups, utilizing evidence-based interventions such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based interventions, and relaxation training. Additionally, the psychologist will lead and/or co-facilitate psychoeducational groups and consult with treatment teams regarding psychological and neuropsychological factors that may impact rehabilitation programs and patient-therapist relationships. The psychologist will also provide capacity evaluations, behavioral management plans, and suicide assessments as needed, co-treat with other allied health disciplines when emotional and/or behavioral factors hinder rehabilitation progress, and offer discharge planning and follow-up services, including referrals for patients and families. They will maintain patient documentation in accordance with organizational requirements and perform any other duties assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Furthermore, the psychologist will participate in the Psychology Training Program with Doctoral-Level Advanced Practicum Students, including individual and group supervision and didactics, and will be involved in research activities and provide professional presentations as requested.
