The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician I Non-Certified position at UNC Health is designed to provide essential support to pharmacists by reviewing, compounding, and dispensing medications. All tasks are performed under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. This role is critical in maintaining the efficiency of pharmacy operations and ensuring that patients receive the correct medications in a timely manner. As an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician, you will be responsible for compounding and preparing various types of medications, including sterile products, oral medications, topical treatments, and controlled substances, as authorized by a physician. You will also be tasked with delivering and exchanging medications to the respective patient areas, as well as returning unused medications to the pharmacy. Accurate documentation of pharmaceutical activities is essential, including patient billing for medications and equipment, and adherence to quality control requirements. In addition to medication preparation and delivery, you will respond to customer requests for assistance with pharmacy services, operate automated dispensing technology, and manage inventory by ordering, receiving, restocking, and rotating medications. You will also contribute to process improvement projects and ensure compliance with regulatory inspections of medication storage areas, including controlled substance inventories and other necessary documentation. This position qualifies for the Pharmacy Technician Incentive Program, which includes $5000 in commitment incentives spread over a two-year period, rewarding your dedication and service to the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Compounds and/or prepares medications (sterile products, oral, topical, controlled substances, etc.) under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
  • Delivers exchanges medications to the respective patient area and returns unused medications to the pharmacy.
  • Documents pharmaceutical activities including patient billing for medications and equipment, quality control requirements, etc. using automated and paper systems.
  • Responds to and triages requests from customers for assistance with pharmacy services such as medication delivery, drug information, etc.
  • Operates and supports automated dispensing technology to supply correct medications for individual patients, according to pharmacist and physician orders.
  • Orders, receives, restocks, and rotates inventory, and completes expiration date management.
  • Contributes to process improvement projects.
  • Completes regulatory compliance inspection of medication storage areas, including inspections and/or controlled substance inventories, USP797 and other regulatory documentation as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Active pharmacy technician registration with the NC Board of Pharmacy (NCBOP) within 30 days of hire.
  • Must obtain pharmacy technician certification from Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA) within 24 months of hire unless registered with the NCBOP as a pharmacy intern and actively enrolled in a PharmD program.
  • Prior pharmacy technician experience is preferred.
  • Completion of an academic pharmacy technician training program preferred.
