About the position

USAA's Catastrophe team is seeking experienced Property Adjusters for in-office claim handling. Candidates are expected to live within a commutable distance from one of our offices in San Antonio, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Colorado Springs, CO, Chesapeake, VA or Tampa, FL. After training in-office, you'll have the opportunity to work in a hybrid model where you can work from home 2 days a week. This position is an hourly, non-exempt role with overtime and CAT pay opportunities. The ideal candidate will possess strong virtual estimating skills for low to moderate severity losses and/or reconcile estimates while working in a telephone concentrated environment without physical inspection of loss. As a Property Adjuster, you will work within defined guidelines and framework, investigating, evaluating, negotiating, and settling low to moderate complexity property insurance claims. You will confirm and analyze coverage, recognize liability exposure, and negotiate equitable settlements in compliance with all state regulatory requirements. Property Adjusters will recognize and empathize with members' life events, as appropriate. This role requires proactive management of assigned claims caseload, partnering with vendors and internal business partners to facilitate claims resolution, and conducting thorough investigations of claim damages. You will also be responsible for maintaining accurate and thorough claim file documentation throughout the claims process, applying knowledge of estimating technology platforms and virtual inspection tools to prepare and manage property insurance claims estimates. Additionally, you will support workload surges and catastrophe (CAT) response operations as needed, including mandatory on-call dates and potential evening, weekend, and/or holiday work outside normal work hours. The role may involve CAT deployment travel with minimal notice during designated CATs, and you may be assigned various types of claims, including those of higher complexity, as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively manage assigned claims caseload comprised of claims with low to moderate complexity damages.
  • Partner with vendors and internal business partners to facilitate claims resolution.
  • Investigate claim damages by conducting research from various sources, including the insured, third parties, and external resources.
  • Identify coverage concerns and review prior loss history.
  • Determine and negotiate claims settlement, coordinating with management for guidance on assessing settlement amounts outside of authority limits.
  • Maintain accurate, thorough, and current claim file documentation throughout the claims process.
  • Apply knowledge of estimating technology platforms and virtual inspection tools to prepare and manage claims estimates.
  • Recognize and address jurisdictional challenges such as applicable legislation and construction considerations.
  • Support workload surges and catastrophe (CAT) response operations as needed, including mandatory on-call dates and potential evening, weekend, and/or holiday work.
  • Work various types of claims, including those of higher complexity, and may be assigned additional work outside normal duties as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma.
  • 1 year of customer service, military leadership, construction related industry/insurance experience and/or experience handling low complexity property claims.
  • Knowledge of estimating losses using Xactimate or similar tools and platforms.
  • Demonstrated negotiation, investigation, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of claims contracts as well as application of case law and state laws and regulations.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task, including navigating through multiple business applications.
  • Acquisition and maintenance of insurance adjuster license within 90 days and 3 attempts.

Nice-to-haves

  • Currently live within a commutable distance to one of our office locations in San Antonio, Phoenix, Colorado Springs, Tampa or Chesapeake for a hybrid in-office work schedule.
  • 1+ years of residential property adjusting of moderate complexity claims.
  • 1+ years of estimate writing skills using Xactimate, ClaimsX or virtual estimating.
  • Experience on a Property Catastrophe team handling inside or field claims (i.e. wind, hail, hurricane, flooding).
  • Experience scoping the loss, assessing damages, interpreting policy and making claim decisions.
  • Knowledge of homeowner property policies and endorsements.
  • Currently hold an active P&C Adjuster license.
  • Prior experience working directly for a standard insurance carrier.
  • Ability to work overtime and extended hours to support CAT claims.
  • US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner.
