About The Position

The Apprentice Inspector Program is a comprehensive training initiative designed for individuals seeking to become Level I Inspectors in the Town of Chapel Hill. This full-time position involves a combination of field and online training over a period of approximately 2.5 years, culminating in the necessary certifications to inspect residential and small commercial construction projects. The role emphasizes understanding and applying North Carolina building codes and FEMA emergency response protocols, preparing apprentices for effective participation in local disaster response efforts.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least one year of customer service experience or relevant education in construction and development.
• Basic math skills and ability to perform calculations and interpret formulas.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Computer skills for report writing, data entry, and email communication.
• Ability to work independently and in a group setting.

Nice To Haves

• Some construction work experience related to residential and/or commercial projects.
• Exposure to building codes, planning or zoning regulations, and governmental policies.

Responsibilities

• Participate in a structured apprenticeship program combining field and online training.
• Inspect residential and small commercial construction projects up to 20,000 square feet.
• Interpret and apply applicable North Carolina Codes including Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Energy Conservation, and Electrical Codes.
• Engage in hands-on field training and online technical training provided by NCDOI-OSFM staff.
• Work collaboratively with local jurisdiction staff and other stakeholders.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
