About the position

Fishbeck is seeking a full-time Civil Field Technician to work in one of our Mid-West offices located in Michigan, Ohio, or Indiana. The primary responsibilities of this position include field observation and documentation of construction contractors' activities to ensure conformance with contract requirements. The ideal candidate must be willing to travel and work in an outdoor environment, making this a great opportunity to gain experience on a variety of projects and develop a career in field inspection. The Civil Field Technician will be responsible for preparing thorough inspector's daily reports (IDRs) that detail the status of the work, including verification of work completed, item postings, materials associations, and jobsite conditions. The technician will work closely with office technicians to ensure proper IDR procedures are followed and submitted in a timely manner. Additionally, the technician will complete and submit required calculations, sketches, and applicable forms, including but not limited to, Inspectors Daily Report of Concrete Placed, Permit to Place, and various inspection report forms. The role also involves verifying and documenting that construction adheres to contract requirements, communicating with senior staff on issues of non-compliance, and assisting with Requests for Information. The technician will serve as a liaison between the contractor and senior technician or engineer to resolve constructability issues or questions. Effective communication with project teams and stakeholders, including project engineers, senior technicians, testing technicians, survey staff, contractors, business owners, and residents, is essential. The technician will work closely with senior technicians and engineers to verify and document the proper execution of project designs.

Responsibilities

  • Field observation and documentation of construction contractors' activities for conformance with contract requirements.
  • Prepare thorough inspector's daily reports (IDRs) detailing the status of the work.
  • Work with office technicians on proper IDR procedures and submit IDRs in a timely manner.
  • Complete and submit required calculations, sketches, and applicable forms.

  • Communicate with appropriate senior staff on issues of non-compliance.
  • Assist with Requests for Information.

Requirements

  • Associates degree or equivalent experience in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Concrete Technology, or similar.
  • 2-5+ years' experience performing inspection on DOT projects is a plus.
  • Experience performing inspection for municipal or local agency projects is acceptable.
  • Experience with or knowledge of DOT documentation requirements and use of Field Manager/Fieldbook is a plus.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, follow direction, and work independently.
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft Office including Word, Outlook, and Excel is a plus, but not required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience performing inspection on DOT projects.
  • Knowledge of DOT documentation requirements and use of Field Manager/Fieldbook.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
