About the position

The Inspector III position at the Florida Department of Transportation involves analyzing complex plans and performing independent technical assignments to inspect and monitor work activities within the state Right of Way. The role requires verifying compliance with State and Federal specifications, conducting tests on materials, and providing information to various stakeholders. The inspector will also review work site activities for safety compliance, conduct surveys, assist in maintenance contract preparations, and represent the Department in meetings related to contracts and permits. The position requires a valid Class E driver license and may involve working with Department of Corrections inmates and hazardous materials.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze complex plans and perform independent complex technical assignments.
  • Verify that work is performed according to all State and Federal specifications.
  • Perform approved testing techniques to ensure materials conform to FDOT requirements.
  • Provide information to consulting engineers, developers, architects, and permit applicants.
  • Prepare documentation to validate payments to roadway contractors.
  • Review work site activities for conformity to safety regulations.
  • Conduct surveys of signs, guardrail, and attenuators.
  • Assist in the preparation of maintenance contracts and specifications.
  • Conduct/attend pre-work conferences and meetings with contractors and utility owners.
  • Perform plans reviews for constructability and adherence to Department standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
  • Class E Driver's License.
  • 12 months of infrastructure design, construction, or maintenance experience.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as stooping, climbing, and crawling.

Nice-to-haves

  • Post-secondary education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Advanced Temporary Traffic Control certification.
  • Qualified Stormwater Management Inspector certification.
