About the position

The Instructional Assistant at North East Independent School District plays a crucial role in supporting teachers and enhancing the educational experience for students in an alternative middle school setting. This position involves assisting with classroom management, preparing instructional materials, and providing direct support to students under the supervision of certified teachers. The role is essential for maintaining a safe and organized learning environment while fostering student engagement and success.

Responsibilities

  • Assist teacher in preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements.
  • Perform routine tasks under the direct supervision of a certified teacher or teaching team.
  • Participate in selecting, planning, organizing, and evaluating classroom activities.
  • Perform classroom clerical operations under the supervision of a certified teacher.
  • Help supervise students throughout the school day, including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
  • Maintain student control, safety, and well-being by actively monitoring students.
  • Assist teacher in preparing and using instructional materials and classroom displays.
  • Assist with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
  • Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
  • Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Record grades and attendance.
  • Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  • Assist teacher in implementing methodology and using instructional media for an educational environment.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher, working with individual students or small groups.
  • Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  • Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Report to work on time every day.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Driver's License.
  • Paraprofessional Certification in one of the required categories.
  • Completion of forty-eight (48) college hours at an accredited college or university or possess an Associate's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Ability to work well with children.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to lift 100 pounds with assistance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with children in an educational setting.
  • Familiarity with classroom management techniques.
