About the position

The Instructional Assistant position is part-time and is located in the Science Department at Cayuga Community College, primarily at the Auburn, NY Campus. The role involves preparing laboratory materials for various science courses, maintaining laboratory equipment, and overseeing student and part-time lab assistants. The assistant will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with safety regulations regarding chemical waste disposal and maintaining accurate records of lab schedules and materials.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares laboratory materials for biology, chemistry, and geology courses (reagents, solutions, live specimens).
  • Maintains laboratory equipment, including monthly inspections of laboratory safety equipment and spill kits.
  • Collects and preserves biological specimens for future use.
  • Grows plant specimens for Botany class.
  • Changes laboratory setups and cleans up after lab exercises.
  • Maintains inventory of laboratory materials and supplies, including safety data sheets, making purchases as necessary.
  • Coordinates with public safety to oversee proper chemical waste disposal in accordance with safety regulations.
  • Coordinates and oversees student and part-time lab assistants.
  • Maintains up to date records of lab schedules and lab exercise handouts.
  • Serves on Cayuga Community College's Environmental Health and Safety Committee.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Division Chair.

Requirements

  • Experience with preparing and handling chemical solutions.
  • Experience with preparing and culturing microbiology organisms.
  • Familiarity with the use of equipment such as microscopes, distillers, autoclave, and electrophoresis chambers.
  • Knowledge of disposal of biological materials and chemicals in accordance with local, state, and Federal regulations.
  • Familiarity with Material Safety Data and safety procedures such as OSHA requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in science preferred.
  • Strong familiarity with laboratory experiments, equipment, and setups.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

Benefits

  • Compensation of $18.05- $22.13 per hour.
  • Part-time hours not to exceed 29 hours per week.
