About the position

The Instructional Assistant/Paraprofessional position is a part-time role focused on supporting school personnel in delivering effective education and training programs for students. The assistant will work closely with teachers and students to reinforce learning, manage classroom activities, and provide a nurturing environment for students, particularly those with special needs.

Responsibilities

  • Comprehend and carry out instructions to reinforce skills taught by teachers.
  • Work with individuals and groups of students as instructed.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as filing, typing, and checking out library equipment and materials.
  • Inventory supplies, materials, and equipment, and record needs and condition of existing items.
  • Assist in preparation of instructional materials, games, and other activities as directed by school personnel.
  • Provide a nurturing environment for assigned students.
  • Supervise students at all times.
  • Implement daily learning activities in accordance with program goals and curriculum.
  • Assist the lead teacher as directed.
  • Interact positively with parents and refer questions and concerns to the Program Lead Teacher.
  • Help children maintain appropriate standards of behavior using non-punitive methods and positive management strategies.
  • Cooperate with other program staff to create and maintain a harmonious and efficient environment.
  • Participate in staff meetings, pre-service, and in-service training programs as required.
  • Follow established policies and procedures to safeguard the health and safety of assigned students.
  • Relieve assigned teacher of non-teaching responsibilities.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding educational information and records.
  • Be professional and courteous at all times.
  • Physically assist students with disabilities when applicable.
  • Assist with grooming needs of students when directed by the supervising teacher.
  • Assist therapists and perform follow-through therapy as prescribed by therapists when applicable.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school graduate
  • Experience with children preferred
  • Ability to relate positively to children and adults
  • Valid Alabama driver's license
  • Positive background check

Benefits

  • $30 an hour
  • Part-time work
  • Regular school term of 182 days or for the remainder of the school year if hired after the first day of school.
