About the position

The Instructional Assistant for Special Education provides essential support in coordinating instructional programs for students with disabilities, ensuring compliance with Individual Education Plans (IEPs). This role involves monitoring student progress, maintaining confidentiality, and fostering a conducive learning environment while adhering to federal, state, and local regulations related to special education.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support and assistance to teachers in coordinating instructional programs for special education students, including familiarity with students' IEPs.
  • Ensures an encouraging, caring, safe, and healthful environment for all students.
  • Assists teachers with strategies related to the implementation of students' behavioral intervention plans.
  • Aids teachers with planning, organizing, evaluating instructional activities, and preparing necessary materials.
  • Demonstrates professional and technical skills necessary to function effectively in the classroom and support student achievement.
  • Maintains a positive disposition and exercises good judgement when dealing with students.
  • Provides in-class support while promoting progress towards independence and self-determination for all students.
  • Assists teachers with implementation of assistive technology and communication devices in the classroom.
  • Compiles, maintains, and files reports, records, and other required documents, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Participates in district staff development programs and continued professional growth.
  • Coordinates and facilitates student transitions between classes and assists with special health care needs.
  • Attends and completes specialized training as determined by the student's IEP.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and working towards an Associate's degree in a related field or a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.
  • Experience working with or assisting individuals with special needs.
  • Ability to protect confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and other applicable laws.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Ability to motivate students and monitor their safety and well-being.
  • Strong communication skills in both oral and written form.

Nice-to-haves

  • First Aid and CPR certifications.
