About the position

The Instructional Assistant position at Clarkes Elementary is a limited duration role requiring 6.5 hours of work per day, five days a week. The anticipated start date is ASAP, with an end date of June 10, 2025. The position involves assisting a licensed teacher in developing instructional programs and working with students individually or in groups. Responsibilities include preparing instructional materials, maintaining classroom discipline, and conducting planned activities using designated methods and materials. Some positions may require specific skills in working with students with disabilities or learning needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers in planning and implementing learning experiences for students.
  • Provide feedback on student performance, progress, and testing activities.
  • Devise special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on individual student needs.
  • Assist in the instruction of students in group or one-on-one settings without direct teacher supervision.
  • Provide for the physical needs of students such as toileting, feeding, and therapy.
  • Monitor classroom management in accordance with district discipline procedures.
  • Supervise students in and outside of the classroom.
  • Perform clerical functions in student record keeping and IEP development.
  • Assist with supervision during emergency drills, assemblies, and play periods.
  • Read to students and participate in oral communication.
  • Check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing.
  • Handle discipline problems according to district procedures.
  • Alert the teacher to any problems or special information about students.
  • Serve as the chief of information for substitute teachers.
  • Participate in in-service programs as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030.
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • In an ESL/migratory position, ability to be bilingual in Spanish, English, or other specified languages.
  • Ability to supervise students in an instructional setting without constant teacher oversight.
  • Ability to deliver instructional programs to students with moderate to severe disabilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a physically and emotionally demanding environment.
  • Ability to work with students who may exhibit aggressive behavior.
  • Ability to assist students with basic feeding and personal hygiene needs.
  • Knowledge of English usage, mathematics, and basic understanding of subjects for assistance.
  • Ability to possess and maintain a valid First Aid card including HIV training.
  • Ability to type accurately and operate standard office equipment.
