About the position

The Instructional Designer 1 (AU Online) at Augusta University plays a pivotal role in guiding and supporting the development of innovative online programs and courses. This position involves direct consultation with individual faculty and faculty groups to enhance online course design, delivery, and quality assurance. The designer will collaborate across various programs and disciplines, working closely with faculty, subject matter experts, and cross-departmental stakeholders to conceptualize, design, develop, and deliver high-quality online courses and learning experiences. The primary focus of the Instructional Designer is to create new online programs and curricula that support fully online offerings, ensuring that the courses meet instructional quality and student experience standards. In this role, the Instructional Designer will assist with quality assurance for online courses and contribute to the development of processes and procedures that enhance consistency, quality, and regulatory compliance. The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of instructional design principles, be a creative problem solver, and engage positively with colleagues across the campus community. The position requires specialization in one or more areas such as curricular project management, learning design, media, and/or instructional technology, with a specific emphasis on multimedia, video production, and editing. The responsibilities of the Instructional Designer include developing instructional materials, supporting quality assurance processes, facilitating faculty professional development, and engaging in ongoing professional growth. The designer will collaborate with faculty to create dynamic content, review and update existing materials, and make informed recommendations based on performance data and feedback. Additionally, the role involves applying rubrics to evaluate course design quality and ensuring compliance with accessibility and accreditation standards. The Instructional Designer will also be responsible for supporting faculty training and consultations to enhance the development of engaging online programs and courses.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with colleagues and faculty on learning design best practices for effective online learning.
  • Assist faculty members with the development of media materials to be incorporated into online courses.
  • Create high-quality assessment plans and artifacts to assess evidence of learning for both formative and summative performances.
  • Source/create dynamic content to ensure learners remain engaged and courses are effective.
  • Review and update existing instructor-led and online content, curating the most relevant content for courses.
  • Make informed recommendations on changes and adjustments to learning experiences using performance data and feedback.
  • Support quality assurance processes for online courses by applying rubrics to evaluate course design and teaching practices.
  • Consult with instructors regarding accessibility of electronic materials, copyright, and compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Support the development of faculty training aimed at assisting faculty in creating engaging online programs and courses.
  • Update and improve personal knowledge and skills related to instructional design and emerging technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years related experience working with a learning management system.
  • OR a Master's degree in instructional design, educational technology, or a related field from an accredited college/university.
  • Two years experience in instructional design, educational technology or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience designing asynchronous, synchronous, hybrid, flipped, and face-to-face instruction is preferred.
  • Successful online and/or hybrid teaching experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Experience implementing a variety of rubrics and standards for quality assurance purposes is preferred.
  • Demonstrated success working with faculty members or other instructional staff to improve teaching and learning is preferred.
  • Experience developing and facilitating professional development opportunities for faculty members is preferred.
  • Experience with learning analytics is preferred.
  • Presentation and/or publication in peer-reviewed contexts is preferred.
  • Video production management experience is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as a team member in instructional design projects.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and innovative instructional approaches.
  • Effective use of a variety of educational technology tools such as Desire2Learn, Echo360, MS Teams, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Competency in web-related technologies including HTML.
