About the position

The Instructional Designer II position at Southern Methodist University (SMU) is a full-time role focused on supporting the design, development, and maintenance of online and hybrid courses for various graduate programs. This position emphasizes collaboration with faculty to enhance course delivery through effective use of e-learning technologies, particularly Canvas, ensuring quality and accessibility standards are met. The role also involves creating multimedia resources and providing training and support to faculty, contributing to a positive student experience and satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Support GCOX faculty in the design, development, and maintenance of online and hybrid courses.
  • Advise and train faculty on instructional strategies and tools to achieve course learning objectives.
  • Perform regular quality and accessibility checks on course content according to institutional standards.
  • Research and recommend emerging technologies and online learning tools for course enhancement.
  • Coordinate course development activities with faculty and course production teams to meet deadlines.
  • Create multimedia resources aligned with learning outcomes, including video presentations and interactive content.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including some evening and weekend work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred in Instructional Systems Design, Education Instruction, or related field.
  • Minimum of three years of work experience in instructional design or related area.
  • Experience working with faculty to design online courses and programs.
  • Experience facilitating the creation of faculty course videos and piloting new teaching technologies.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to analyze and devise solutions.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with Quality Matters standards.
  • Experience with multimedia production using eLearning authoring tools such as Camtasia, Articulate Storyline, or Adobe Captivate.
  • Knowledge of course design principles and theories.
