About the position

The Instructional Designer II at Texas A&M University's Mays Business School plays a crucial role in the design and development of innovative, high-quality online, hybrid, and face-to-face learning content. This position is integral to ensuring that the educational offerings align with instructional design and pedagogical best practices. The designer will collaborate closely with faculty, subject matter experts, and staff to create digitally enhanced courses that foster student engagement and interactivity with course materials, peers, and instructors. The role requires a commitment to advancing the educational mission of Mays Business School, which aims to create impactful knowledge and develop transformational leaders. In this position, the Instructional Designer II will independently meet with faculty and subject matter experts to design and develop engaging learning content that promotes active learning. This includes creating learning objectives that align with course materials, curating accessible content, and designing interactive activities that facilitate engagement among students and instructors. The designer will also be responsible for building learning content within the TAMU Canvas environment and evaluating the quality of courses using established quality rubrics. Additionally, the role involves project management responsibilities, where the designer will monitor project progress, troubleshoot issues, and maintain communication with stakeholders. The Instructional Designer II will also contribute to faculty development by creating guides and training materials that support faculty in the learning design process. This includes providing training on the Learning Management System (LMS) and other instructional technologies. The position requires adaptability to changing priorities and a proactive approach to staying informed about emerging trends in online instruction and pedagogy.

Responsibilities

  • Independently meet with faculty and subject matter experts to design and develop innovative, high-quality online, hybrid, and face-to-face learning content.
  • Facilitate the learning design process by developing learning objectives that align with course materials and assignments.
  • Create and curate learning content that is accessible, engaging, and promotes active learning.
  • Design activities that promote interactivity with the content, between students, and between students and instructors.
  • Build learning content in the TAMU Canvas environment.
  • Collaborate with faculty to locate and evaluate learning materials, including open educational resources (OER) and third-party media.
  • Provide training and resources on copyright and fair use topics.
  • Work with subject matter experts on the planning of media assets, including video, audio, graphics, and other appropriate media.
  • Evaluate the quality of courses using a course quality rubric established by Mays Business School.
  • Monitor project progress, anticipate and troubleshoot roadblocks, and communicate frequently with the director about project status.
  • Develop guides, resources, and training materials to support faculty with the learning design process and research-based best practices in teaching and learning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of experience in instructional design or related experience in K-12 education, higher education, adult learning and literacy, or training and development.
  • Knowledge of quality design standards such as Quality Matters, OLC Scorecard, or similar rubrics.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects and work collaboratively and professionally with others.
  • Ability to apply instructional design theories, principles, best practices, and current trends in teaching and learning.

Nice-to-haves

  • More than two years of experience in instructional design or related experience in K-12 education, higher education, adult learning & literacy, or training and development.
  • Experience curating, researching, writing, proofreading, and editing instructional materials.
  • Experience designing, developing, and implementing innovative, engaging, and accessible online, hybrid, and face-to-face learning content.
  • Experience interacting with faculty and students to provide support.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Canvas and contemporary learning technologies, and in the use of basic programming relating to online learning (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.).
  • Knowledge of project management best practices and tools.
