About the position

We are looking for an Instructional Designer who will advance the institution's proud tradition of excellence in academics, student life, and community service. This part-time position at Houston Community College (HCC) involves providing assistance and training to faculty and team members in the application of instructional and interface design for online and hybrid courses. The Instructional Designer will coordinate and collaborate with the Master Course Development team to design and produce quality online courses across various modalities. The role includes directing the work and providing leadership to the multimedia and Master Course Development teams, as well as some part-time employees. The Instructional Designer will assist faculty in selecting electronic delivery methods, utilizing instructional software, and effectively using multimedia. Troubleshooting assistance on course design problems will also be part of the responsibilities. Additionally, the designer will create learning materials in various formats, including print, graphics, and multimedia, to support teaching and learning, as well as college information needs. Workshops and online training sessions will be designed, developed, and delivered to faculty, focusing on the use of instructional technologies and educational best practices. The Instructional Designer will also research innovative trends in educational practices and technologies to assist faculty in developing new teaching methods. Participation in training and developmental activities is required, and the designer may provide program-level support by working with Deans, instructional leaders, and faculty.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the work and provide leadership to the multimedia and Master Course Development teams and some part-time employees.
  • Coordinate with Master Course Developer to design and produce quality online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses and training materials.
  • Provide assistance to team members and faculty with instructional and interface design.
  • Assist faculty in the selection of electronic delivery methods, use of instructional software, and effective uses of multimedia.
  • Provide troubleshooting assistance on course design problems.
  • Design and produce learning materials in a variety of formats including print, graphics, and multimedia to support teaching and learning.
  • Design, develop, and deliver workshops and online training to faculty in the use of instructional technologies and educational best practices.
  • Research innovative and latest trends on educational best practices, instructional resources, and technologies.
  • Research, recommend, and participate in decision-making for the purchase of or transition to new software and technology.
  • Keep current with instructional design and ADA web compliance issues.
  • Participate in training and developmental activities and seminars, as required.
  • May provide program level support to include working with Deans, instructional leaders, and faculty.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Educational Technology, or related fields required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Associate's degree plus 4 years of formal training in a recognized field of specialization that is directly related to the type of work being performed may be considered in lieu of required degree.
  • 1 year of directly job-related experience working with various operating systems required.
  • Experience in instructional design and teaching in an institution of higher education or community college is preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Programs, Course Management Systems, and Instructional Technology Applications.
  • Knowledge of Instructional Design Theory and Practices, and Research Instructional Technologies.
  • Familiarity with Project Management Principles.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with multimedia production tools.
  • Familiarity with ADA compliance in instructional design.
