About the position

The Instructional Designer positions at Southern Company are integral to the Technical Training Support group, focusing on the development and implementation of training curriculum and content for the Power Delivery Substation and Engineering sectors. The Instructional Designer, Substation will be based at the Klondike Training Center in Stonecrest, GA, while the Instructional Designer, Engineering can work from either The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL, or the Klondike Training Center. The role requires a hybrid work schedule, with a minimum of two days in the office each week, although flexibility is offered depending on project needs. Travel for this position is expected to be less than 25%. In this role, the instructional designer will leverage their expertise in instructional design and multimedia to analyze, design, develop, implement, evaluate, and maintain various training materials, including eLearning modules, facilitator guides, and job aids. The designer will collaborate closely with internal customers and subject matter experts to gather course content and ensure that the training materials align with organizational learning objectives. The position demands a strong understanding of instructional design theories and practices, as well as the ability to apply these in creating effective learning experiences that drive results. The instructional designer will also be responsible for managing projects, adhering to timelines, and ensuring that all learning projects are delivered on time and within budget. This includes engaging in curriculum planning, executing project plans, and maintaining course documentation in various systems. The role requires a proactive approach to research and innovation in learning design, advocating for continuous improvement in educational practices.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in curriculum planning and development, including specification of learner outcomes, content design, and selection of instructional delivery formats.
  • Execute project plans and adhere to timelines for all learning projects, ensuring timely and budget-compliant delivery.
  • Apply instructional design theories and methods to create a variety of instructional materials for instructor-led courses and online modules.
  • Ensure compliance of online materials with system requirements and accessibility standards.
  • Collaborate with customers, subject matter experts, and business leaders to develop training materials based on provided information.
  • Upload and maintain content documentation and course folders in systems like SharePoint and SumTotal.
  • Maintain courses by editing content and publishing updates as needed.
  • Manage projects and meet timelines with minimal supervision.
  • Apply aspects of adult education, including classroom and e-learning technologies, related to specific content.
  • Initiate, plan, organize, monitor, and report on work, providing leadership to project teams when appropriate.
  • Research and advocate for innovations in learning design and education, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Instructional Design, Adult Learning, Educational Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience with authoring tools such as Articulate 360 and animation software is required.
  • Training experience in power delivery, distribution, transmission, construction, or power generation is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including facilitation and presentation skills, are required.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required.
  • Experience managing projects is required.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment and achieve results with minimal supervision.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in instructional design for technical training is a plus.
  • Familiarity with e-learning technologies and adult learning principles is beneficial.
