About the position

Sullivan University is seeking a full-time Instructional Designer/Technologist to join our team in Louisville, KY. This on-campus position is pivotal in creating and maintaining both new and existing courses, working closely with academic leadership, faculty, and staff to develop hybrid and online courses along with supplementary materials as needed. The Instructional Designer/Technologist will provide day-to-day support for faculty and students utilizing the institution's Learning Management System (LMS), which includes technical support, troubleshooting, training, and general customer service. This role is essential in ensuring that our educational offerings meet the highest standards and effectively serve our students' needs. The successful candidate will engage regularly with faculty subject matter experts throughout the course development process, ensuring that course objectives, content, assessments, materials, and resources align with university standards and regulatory requirements. The Instructional Designer/Technologist will also collaborate with various departments and instructors to provide training, troubleshoot issues, and support new initiatives. This position requires a proactive approach to monitoring help desk reports, identifying trends, and providing solutions or training as necessary. Additionally, the role involves developing non-course content within the LMS and participating in faculty development workshops to enhance instructional design and technology use. The working hours for this position are primarily Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, with some evenings and weekends required to accommodate the needs of faculty and students. The Instructional Designer/Technologist will play a crucial role in the continuous improvement of our instructional design and support services, contributing to the overall mission of Sullivan University to make a difference in the lives of our students.

Responsibilities

  • Meet regularly with faculty subject matter experts during the course development process.
  • Ensure that course objectives, content, assessments, materials, and resources meet University standards and regulatory requirements and follow sound principles of instruction.
  • Work with departments and instructors from across the institution concerning training, troubleshooting, advising, quality control, triage, new initiatives, problem-solving, testing and retesting, reporting, and tracking.
  • Provide technical support to faculty for the LMS and communicate regularly with instructors regarding quick tips and important information, assisting them in using the LMS, and troubleshooting issues that arise.
  • Develop and provide training on the LMS to faculty to supplement the online training program for new faculty, including training of section instructors, and create instructional support materials for students and faculty.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of faculty development workshops and other activities in instructional design and the use of instructional technology.
  • Develop non-course content within the learning management systems as needed, such as training courses.
  • Work with faculty to develop courses within the learning management system, including formatting and configuring text, images, assignments, assessments, and grade books.
  • Review existing courses to ensure compliance with course standards established by the institution.
  • Manage quarterly course triage (original and live courses).
  • Monitor monthly help desk reports and emails, watching trends, and contacting instructors with solutions or training as needed.
  • Monitor quarterly textbook lists from campus bookstores to determine courses that need triaging before going live due to edition or book changes.
  • Work with academic leadership to coordinate updating courses due to new text editions, book changes, and problems identified in courses; complete all updates identified by the department.
  • Serve as a feature/function expert in the LMS, test changes in upcoming versions on the test server, and work with instructional designers to determine the best way to use LMS functions/features for specific design issues when building courses.
  • Assist with the management and ongoing improvement of the learning management system, including developing and maintaining course shells.
  • Manage the quarterly process of creating shells, copying courses, and assigning instructors in the LMS.
  • Provide business-to-business support for non-academic use of the LMS system.
  • Provide consultation to academic leaders and staff on the strategic, tactical, and operational issues associated with developing curriculum and instructional technology within Sullivan University.
  • Manage using the LMS by tracking timelines and progress and monitoring courses taught for activity and content.
  • Participate in preparing and delivering the annual Instructional Design and Support services assessment of continuous improvement activities to the University's Planning and Evaluation Coordinating Council (PECC).
  • Provide reports as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Three years of related experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience is considered
  • Proficient knowledge of the LMS system utilized by the institution, including the ability to make edits and correct errors within courses
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new software quickly
  • Ability to maintain concentration and attention to detail while working for extended periods
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, as needed to serve the students, faculty, and staff of the institution promptly
  • Excellent customer service, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to coordinate multiple responsibilities efficiently while meeting required deadlines
  • Ability to sit for extended periods
  • Ability to hear and speak well enough to communicate with students, parents, faculty, and staff face-to-face, virtually, and via telephone.
