The University of Virginia is seeking a part-time Instructional Designer to join the School of Data Science. This role is designed for an energetic problem-solver who will assist in enhancing the educational goals of various academic programs. The Instructional Designer will be responsible for designing, leading, and assessing strategies that empower faculty and staff to effectively utilize a range of educational technologies, including the Learning Management System, video conferencing tools, grading systems, communication platforms, code repositories, electronic books, and community-building systems. This position is focused primarily on the M.S. in Data Science (MSDS) Online program, where the designer will help instructors manage tools such as Canvas and Zoom, and establish sustainable course design practices across the curriculum. In addition to supporting the MSDS Online program, the Instructional Designer will assist faculty with annual course refresh terms, create strategies for the use of current and emerging educational technologies, and communicate these strategies widely within the School and through individual consultations with faculty. The role also involves meeting with technology vendors to assess their offerings, staying current with research on educational outcomes in online learning environments, and understanding the contributions of online tools to residential programs. A key responsibility will be to generate a strategy for making MSDS Online course materials open-source and to standardize the use of various resources such as Rivanna, Teams, and GitHub across courses. Collaboration with UVA Information Technology Services, the Center for Teaching Excellence, and other colleagues will be essential to ensure best practices in online education delivery.
