About the position

The Instructional Designer position at the American Welding Society is responsible for creating, developing, and deploying instructional materials and resources to support education and training initiatives. This role involves collaboration with Subject Matter Experts to design online courses, multimedia presentations, and various educational documents, ensuring adherence to design standards and best practices in instructional design.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to create, develop, and revise educational and training materials.
  • Identify necessary reference materials and resources for course development.
  • Create learning objectives, desired outcomes, assessments, and lesson plans for synchronous and asynchronous online training and face-to-face instructor-led courses.
  • Create design templates, graphical elements, and written content for training courses.
  • Maintain project timelines for content developed using ADDIE and AGILE methodologies.
  • Create engaging interactive online training using instructional design best practices.
  • Use visual design best practices to deliver impactful instructional materials.
  • Increase the quality and effectiveness of content presentation and delivery based on feedback.
  • Review and edit materials written by others and provide suggestions for revision.
  • Ensure that all educational materials adhere to AWS design standards and comply with applicable codes and governing documents.
  • Write and edit supplemental content such as newsletters, blogs, and advertising copy.
  • Participate in the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Curriculum Design & Instruction, Writing, Education, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in technical writing and/or instructional design.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Strong understanding of adult learning theories and current instructional design best practices.
  • High technical aptitude; ability to convey complex technical concepts through multimedia.
  • Ability to engage positively with team members in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and deliver multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Skilled in lesson planning, curriculum development, and modular content creation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Articulate 360, and Adobe product suites.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency with digital layout and design tools (e.g., Adobe InDesign).
  • Proficiency with multimedia creation/editing software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Final Cut Pro, Audition).
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS).
  • Working knowledge of the welding industry or related fields.
