About the position

The Instructional Designer at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth collaborates with faculty and subject matter experts to enhance course design and delivery across various learning modalities, including face-to-face, hyflex, online, and blended formats. This role focuses on providing pedagogical consultations, developing instructional materials, and ensuring adherence to quality guidelines and deadlines. The designer also plays a crucial role in promoting accessibility and effective teaching strategies, ultimately supporting the academic success and retention of students.

Responsibilities

  • Work one-on-one with faculty to develop course objectives, sequencing of instruction, assessments, and course materials.
  • Incorporate instructional technologies into course design and provide technical support.
  • Advise faculty on accessibility criteria and teaching strategies to achieve ADA compliance.
  • Create accessible instructional media and teach faculty how to produce accessible content.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Designer to develop and facilitate instructional development training courses and workshops.
  • Develop documentation, training, and instructional materials to support technology use in teaching and learning.
  • Conduct course site reviews to ensure quality courses as part of the internal review process.
  • Develop customized course templates for various program formats.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies to enhance online instructional effectiveness.
  • Provide technical support for the university's Learning Management System (LMS) and other teaching technologies.
  • Log inquiries in the IT case management system and ensure resolution.
  • Understand and document customer instructional needs and priorities.
  • Promote cross-team collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Participate in professional development to stay updated on instructional design practices and technologies.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or a related field.
  • Over 3 years of experience designing online and/or blended college-level courses.
  • Over 3 years of experience with a learning management system.
  • Over 5 years of significant experience in higher education.

Nice-to-haves

  • Over 3 years of experience using Canvas.
  • Over 3 years of experience teaching online at the college level.
